After injectors #5 and #6 replace now blowing black smoke
I have a 2004 and just turned 62,500k I noticed that it started to shake a lot when at a stop or right when i started the rig (no smoke or any other signs). I took it to the dodge dealership since its still under warranty and they replaced the #5 and #6 injectors. Also they did some fuel system injector clean on the truck that i thought was unnecessary but what ever they did it.
After i got the truck back it ran great, really smooth at idle and when starting from cold, but i noticed excessive amounts of black smoke coming out of the tailpipe when driving it under normal excceleration. From a cold start in the morning there is no sign of smoke only happens when i give it throttle both normal acceleration and heavy acceleration, the problem is it doesnt clear out like it used to before i took it in.
Ive owned a dodge ram diesel for over 12 years used to have a 1997 and i never had this issue. This truck has never had black smoke all the time when accelerating until i had the injectors replaced. When sitting at idle the smoke is gone when i goose it a little in park a big puff of black smoke shoots out of the tailpipe.
Im no genius but i would say that it is getting too much fuel and throwing smoke when under acceleration (not throwing any codes either)... Any ideas? Thanks!

Do you think that it would be the nozzels on the new injectors since i noticed this after they replaced them last week?
I spoke with the tech that worked on my truck and he said that it is possible that they were bad and he would replace them on Monday.

Another thing that i noticed is that when driving on the freeway at say 50mph when i give it throttle up to say 70 mph it feels like its lugging could this be part of the same issue that its getting too much fuel when accelerating?
Thanks

ok no when mine didthat it didnt lug. but now that you added that info i would say check your intercooler boots it sounds like it may be a boost issue. they may not have gotten the clammps tight enough or something a boost gauge reading would help identify if it was a boost issue
I checked all of the connections on the intercooler boots last night and they are all connected correctly and tight. Not sure what else this could be other than one or both of the new injectors are bad and pouring too much fuel causing the black smoke and lugging.

have you checked for codes. the only other thing i can think of is that the cleaner they ran thru merssed up the nozzles on the other injectors.I know when mine started blowing real black the truck still had pep
Yep i checked for Codes and its not returning any.
When i start from a stop the truck has all of the normal power, but when im on the freeway at say 50mph and start to accelerate thats when i notice the lugging which it never did before plus a lot of black smoke that never clears it self out.
I just made another appointment to have the injectors replaced again and then test the rest. It will be in the shop again on Monday morning. I will update on what they do.
Thanks

Get them to verify the injector part numbers. When I had my injectors replaced, they put the wrong ones in. It would smoke under all conditions from light to heavy throttle. On highway constant stream of smoke. Brought truck back to them, they tried to blame the air filter, I said no way. Check injectors. they finally admitted/found that the part number on the box did not match the part # on the injectors.

grey your right i forgot that his was an 04 they may have put the wrong injectors in since their was a mid year hp change that would explain the smoke and lugging
Grey TD - I just picked up my truck after dropping it off yesterday and you were right they installed the wrong injectors. I had them double check the part numbers and then they called me and said they installed the wrong ones. They replaced them with the correct injectors and My truck now runs real good no lugging and no black smoke.
Thanks for all of the information they probably never would have figured that out without me telling them that was the problem.
