Additives
I know this has been beat to death here, but I am have my first diesel truck and this is my first winter here in WV with it. The station guy said they reccomend running an additive to help keep the injectors lubed through the blended fuel months. Can someone reccomend an additive that will do this very well, and is there an additive with antigel that will help me through the extremly cold times that lubes also. I do not have much to chose from around me in the way if big chain stores, it is Wild Wonderful WV
I am sorry for bringing it up again, but my searches brought in an overwhelming number of posts

I've started running Power Service Diesel Kleen - the white bottle. We haven't had any serious cold stuff yet so I can't comment on its effectiveness.
Where in WV are you? Eastern Panhandle here.

Most guys are killing 2 birds with 1 rock and using a 75% power service and 25% marvel mystery oil mix. It ups the cetane level, lubes the system, and is an anti gel for winter.
The bonus is an increase in mpg also! Wal mart carries both as do most auto parts stores.

Stanadyne, and although it's not as easy to find as some of the other additives it seems to be the only one with OEM approvals, multiple approvals at that. There are no Cummins/Dodge recommendations, but some comments from Cummins suggest that a fuel additive for lubricity makes sense, in addition to more specialized cnditions like cold weather.

I think you may be speaking for too many...I don't think 'most' guys run that combo at all. Powerservice has like 65% market share or something ridiculous like that in the additive market...by far the most common. Some that believe in demulsifying and trust their water separator run stanadyne. Powerservice DFS, Redline, Primrose, FPPF, and some others emulsify/solubize the water. I personally use redline and think mmo does nothing. Just my opinion..
both power service & howes, this directly from Howes web site: Howes Meaner Power Kleaner
A non-solvent, alcohol free product formulated to increase the life of the fuel injection system, resulting in more power, lower emissions, increased Mpg’s and a decrease in maintenance costs. Reduces sediment formation, including rust and scale, plus eliminates water problems. Rated “superior” in the Cummins L-10 test. Guaranteed 4.8% improvement in fuel economy or double your money back. http://www.howeslube.com/products/in...category/10#20

Guys,
Power Service Diesel Klean does nothing for anti-gel (silver bottle).
Power Service anti-gel (white bottle) is for winter or cold weather use.
I used the Power Service in the white bottle for a couple of winters running straight #2 with temps down to -30 without problems, and that was in a 99 CTD which are prone to have bad lift pumps.
I agree with Lightman on the snake oil additives. I have tried every combo there is: two stroke oil, MMO, Howes, Power service, non detergent 30 weight oil, Acetone, ETC, ETC. mixed, shaken, a little this and a little that, no change in MPG noted. If there was a change it was because of conservative driving. Save your money.

50-50
I've decided to go with a 50/50 mix of PS and MMO.
PS says 32 oz for 100 gals, which equals 3.2 oz for 10 gals.
MMO says 4 oz for 10 gals.
my mix is 12 oz PS with 12 oz (24 oz total) MMO for a 30 gallon fill.
when i only add 15 gallons, i put in 12 oz of my special brew.
by the way, I use the WHITE bottle of PS, it is the anti-gel formula.
I had been using stanadyne the last year, but PS is easier to get-practically every store has it.

I have to chime in on this one too!
I have been using MMO and the white bottle power service at about a 50-50 mix. I do get consistantly good mileage with my rig, (22.5+ unloaded) . I also have had incredible response from the electric high pressure (55psi) fuel pump in my Peugeot using mmo. Without a few ounces in the tank the pump actually stalls intermittantly. I started using MMO in it about 40K miles ago to see if it would stop the pump stalling problem. If I forget to put it in within 2 tanks the stalling pump is back. The lubricity of this stuff is amazing. It has also aparently cleaned up the cumbustion chambers so much that I no longer need to run premimum in the summer to stop the engine from pinging. I have long term data from the Peugeot and short term from the cummins. I believe that the PS/MMO has improved the mileage consistancey and it sure can't be hurting the fuel pump(s), based on the Peugeot response. My motivation is to get reliable operation with minimal expense and maintaince thus no or very few trips to the dealer.

I myself gave up on the additives except for when it hits the -35 which is usually on a few days out fo the year here and I usually just stay home then as the truck never warms up for the day anyways..lol
One thing I do is fill up at the same place 99% of the time. There are times when I am on the road and see it for a few cents cheaper but I never like to risk it.
Been filling up at the same place since 95 and have yet to get a bad load of fuel or have anything more than a drop or two of water in the seperator when I change the filter.

I've tried them all! But no one talks about Schaeffers.
If you want the best Schaeffers Neutra plus #192. Aeromatics are what keep our pumps healthy and schaeffers has the highest % than anybody. Open up a bottle and see for yourself it actually has a thick consistancy!
