ABS locked up!

Here's my truck: 2006 2500 LB 4x4 4 door, 6 speed

So I was driving about 25mph in 4x4 hi and suddenly the front end made a horrible sound (like you hear when you slam on the brakes and the abs kicks in) and it felt like I had dropped an anchor off my bumper. I pulled over (actually kept it straight, the road bent to the left) and shut off the truck, scared my tranny had fallen off or something real bad had happened. The dash beeped at me and the ABS light was blinking, as well as the parking brake light was solid on even with the brake off. I felt the tranny and the front diff for heat and didn't notice anything unusual. From there I the truck wouldn't move forward or backward. I've got the model with the 4x4 shifter **** on the dash, not a stick on the floor, so I tried to disengage 4x4 but it didn't work. I followed the manual's instructions to get the transfer case to neutral and that worked, however the front tires wouldn't roll for the tow truck's winch.

What happened??? Thank goodness I was driving only 25 at the time, because it could have been a lot worse!!

Open a bleed screw on calipers should have gotten you moving for the tow. This has got to be wierd!!! Something must be causing abs module to close bleed back valves. Or perhaps a stuck MC piston. Keep us informed of progress.

Possible front diff failure, spider gears broken. Would lock up front axle and if antilock module didn't see wheel speed signal would but antilock lite on. Were you driving on dry pavement in 4X4 mode?

The road was covered in snow, would the diff failure be covered by the 100k warranty?

Similiar Problem

I had a similiar problem the other day, just bought this '04 3500 with the 5.9 cummins and was driving to work at about 20mph with it in 4 wheel high due to the roads covered in solid ice (couldn't go anywhere without the truck in 4 wheel drive) anyway I drove about 13 miles and stopped at a traffic light and when I went to take off after it turned green about 100 ft. it was like I was pressing on the brakes. I made it about another 100ft. and the front brakes were locked up solid, no warning lights on the dash or nothing, just front brakes locked up. I let the truck set for about 2 hours and came back and it was fine, hasn't done it since....3 days now.....any ideas anyone?

There was a recall on the ABS, RECALL #F05. Anti-lock brake system control module. Something about causing the brakes to lock up - can't remember if it was front or rear brakes, maybe both lock up. You might want to check on it and see if it applies to your truck. You can go to Dodge's website, under customers services (or something like that) you can log in you vin to see what recalls, etc apply to your truck.

Talking Thanks

Thank you. I have only had the truck for a week and this happened. I did have an '01 F350 7.3 powerstroke, but that thing was a money pit so I decided to go with the Dodge with the Cummins and give it a try.

You might want to check and make sure that the recall was DONE to your truck. If not, it's free, get it done. They recalled the early 2006's, supposedly at some point in mfg they took care of it at the factory, the build would have a (-)dash number of the correct pn unsed, could have STILL slipped through manufacturing, been known to happen.

There was also a recall #19, roll over valve hose, it was a 'customer satisfaction-safety' type recall. You might want to see that it was done also.

Check with a dealership, have them run the vin on service records, I'm sure they would be more than happy to do these because Chrysler pays the bill whether in/out of warranty. MANY people are not on the internet, if they did their own service work, chances are they did not get this stuff done. Chrysler didn't mail out anything to anyone regarding this stuff. It does drop off their radar after 2 years when checking a VIN on their site.

So the code came up rear abs sensor, picked up a new one for $25 from dodge, then the mechanic found the real problem. I lost my pinon bearing in the front, didn't do any damage to the ring and pinon thank goodness, but that was what failed. I checked with the dealer, out of warranty by 10K...#@$& What do you think could cause the bearing to fail, dirty oil or crud in there?

You might want to check the codes on your truck, if a rear abs sensor shows up, it could be worth replacing. I was told the sensor can start to go bad and fail from time to time. I picked one up for $25 from the dealership.

you were absolutely right, it was the pinion bearing siezed to the shaft spinning the inside of the diff housing into pieces. the rear bearing race won't come off the shaft and the pinion is shredded...new differential needed. the mechanic took 2 weeks to finally figure that one out, so i'm taking it down the road.

the guy i'm taking it to found a rebuilt differential and should have it in his shop next week. my $25 abs sensor jumped to $325 for pinion bearings to $1900 for a differential .

do you guys have any sources for a cheaper differential? i had a possible junk yard pick with 100K on it for $1900, and another with 75K for $2100. I prefer to go with the rebuilt one because it comes with a 3 year warranty.
