How many quarts of transmission fluid do you add after a transmission filter change in an '05 Dodge 2500 4x4?

The book on the 48re says 4.1 quarts for a filter change but mine was just over 6. So buy 7 quarts and you should be covered. Just do not over fill it, add 4, warm it up then keep adding a little at a time till it is where it should be. You could also measure the amount of oil you drain.
Dodge told me it would only take just over 4 qt's for my 06. After it was all said and done it took 6.5 qt's of trans fluid to bring it back to the full mark on the dip stick. BTW I used Amsoil ATF as its a full a synthetic trans fluid and it can take more heat then stock ATF.

The answer lies in how good or bad the fluid drains from your tranny. Slight clearance variations allow for different amounts of fluild to drain from one tranny to another. Generally 4 - 6 quarts will catch most. Occasionally more will be required. Don't overfill and move shift lever slowly through gears and check in neutral, with engine idling.

I'm going with Amsoil ATF also when I change my tranny filter this weekend. I just looked on the back of the bottle and it says, "Compatible with petroleum fluids"
No I did not flush out the Mopar trans fluid as it was still good, I did my first trans service at around 9K. I have put about 14K on the mixed trans fluid with out any problems. As No Plugs said Amsoil trans fluid is Compatible with all petroleum trans fluids.
I'm not sure about Mopar ATF-4

I've learned that some group III fluids and oils can be called synthetic even though they are not. To me synthetic fluids and oils are made from either group IV or V base stock not crude oil. After reading the Valvoline MSDS it states that it only meets Mopar spec 9602 not exceed it like a group IV or V synthetic would. So based on what I read one would think that its made from group III fluids and there for not a synthetic fluid, just highly refined dino oil that can be called synthetic thanks to some uninformed Judge in the Mobil/Castrol lawsuit many years ago.

Although not a 3rd gen, I changed mine this past weekend. What a mess. I think it still needs a 6th quart and from what I learned the ATF+5 and above is considered synthetic fluid. You definately need more than the recommended 4 quarts!
