AAM Failure

Anyone destroyed an AAM axle yet?

How did it happen? What did it do?

I bought my 03 with 25k miles on it and the diff was about 2" low and had a lot of bearing wear already - preloads are 1/2 of what they should be. It's quiet so Dodge won't do any warranty. I put RP 75w140 in it but I have mixed feelings about that. Maybe I should do like DC did - put their really sh!tty 75w90 back in (2" low, of course, just like they did) and finish it off, before the 7/70 runs out. Craig

How did you determine there was a lot a bearing wear?

Going to the AAM 11.5" rear end is probably one of the best things Dodge/Chrysler has ever done.
They are some really stout axles. Far superior to a Dana 80 in stock form.

Yeah, I couldn't believe how much beefier the AAM was on my '05 than the Dana 80 on my '98

Big thumbs up the the AAM axles.
Streetsmoker broke his, but I thing it was a lubrication issue or the lack there of when he bought the truck.

I busted the plug welds on my AAM front axel housings. Not so Heavy Duty$3009.00. Dealer wouldn't cover it.

How is the AAM stouter than the dana 80? Not challenging you, I'm just curious, since I haven't seen the inside of an AAM yet.

Not only is it stouter, the Dodge version axle tubes are larger than the GM versions.

I now the tubes are larger...But I thought the axle shafts are larger in a dana 80.
I am very currious about these axles since I am trying to locate an 80 for my 97 F350 once I finish my CTD conversion. The track record for the Ford Sterling 10 1/4 rear isn't very good once it drags a sled down the track a few times, especially with over a half ton of torque going through it.
How does AAM axles compare to the Dana 80 for sled pulling?

Brent.
