600 engine sound,...help

There is a reflash for the miss and smoke at start up mine is going to get that done tomarow along with figuring out what my ticking noise is. I am convinsed it is a injector ticking but my service rep thinks its in the valve train. I am sure the injector is sticking open or at least bleeding down over a period of time when left sit for a few days. I am sure that is what is causing the smoke and miss at start up after a few days sitting. I dont know how a reflash can fix a mecanical problem but I gues they have 100k to figure it out.

600 noise
CA DAN,
That was sooo cool! But no,..that's not what mine sounded like. Don't let anyone be around you if you do this,..but it is a lower pitched sound and not quite as metalic as what yours is. It sounds like Chuka, Chuka, Chuka,...now with no one around that will think your losing it,, say the abv words quickly like on a sewing machine type rythym and you've got it! It's hard to immulate this way I know but I'm not smart enough to know how you guys do all this sound file stuff and such.
BKRUKOW,
What you are describing is what I had with the cold start smoke,..not all that much after one day but after 3 or more days look out. Filled the entire 2 car garage in a couple seconds. And it never smoked at all before. Also the miss for a couple minutes on cold start and then the Chuka, Chuka, Chuka sound described above at idle and also at low rpm say 15mph with the windows down. It probably kept on missing but with exhaust and road noise I never noticed. I'm sure glad they took another look at it as after the 1st day of having it they said "nothing was wrong". I said well it's more than a coincidence that I have these three symptoms all starting at the same time and I further told them if it got screwed up it was on them as I had done all I can to bring it to their attention. I told them I have another vehicle and it's theirs to further evaluate if they think they should and they agreed and sure enough they came back with the injector problem evaluation. He made it sound like isolating the injector was gonna be monumental though. Sounded ok with me,...replace them all. Not my problem. They indicated it would be a couple more days and I'll be out of town till next Tuesday so I won't or can't pick it up until then and then I'll get back with you guys.

out-of-here I drive mine every day so unless they give me a loner vehicle I cant leave it sit. The only reason I know mine smokes on cold start up is because I went on vacation a month ago to Colorado and left it sit for several days while we where out on the ATVs. When I started it to go to town a few days later it smoked and missed like mad. I got mine back today and they claim there is nothing wrong. They checked the valve back lash and injector hold downs and did a power drop test and claim everything is perfect. The servise manager came out last week to the parking lot and listened to the tick and agreed something was definetly wrong, now today he claims he could barely hear it. I dont know what to do now. I gess Ill drive it till something becomes MORE "obviously wrong" and go back. Hopefully something breaks and it wont be an issue as to whether ther is a problem or not.

CADan,
Thanks a bunch for posting that sound clip. I test drove one truck and bought another. It was always my impression the one I bought was noisier than my 1st test drive and had a knock in it from day one. I even took it into the dealer and got the "it's a diesel dude!" reply. Additionally, I've never been impressed with my fuel mileage either.
My truck does exactly the same thing yours does when warmed up. I even figured it out it's cylinder #1 by touching the injector fuel lines. It's the only one that has the vibration in it that just happens to correspond with the knock sound. My truck is going back to the dealer tommorrow!
Let us know what happens with your truck.

The saga continues...
Well today marks the 2 weeks that my dealer has had my vehicle. I don't know anymore than when he started and neither does he. They spent 3 days validating what I told them to begin with. Then it was to take another 3 days to test the injectors as they can only do 2 injectors per day to test for bleed down. But that took 6 days,..not 3 for some reason. Then the latest is that Star told them to run some injector cleanor through them and get back with them with the next step being to test compression on each cylinder. Well I use Power Service every 2 or 3 tanks so I doubt the additive will do anything. So no good news to those who have a similar problem in the way of feedback yet. I will get back when I know something solid.

CA Dan that is what my truck sounds like. I posted a thread yesterday about it. Please let us know whether or not the new injector made the noise go away.
Like I said I am hearing roughly the same noise and it only seems to be ther when I shift inot gear and once I put it in park it either goes away or gets alot less noticable.

Mine made some noise with a tank of diesel I got on our trip to Oregon last spring. I added a whole can of Stanadyne in tthe next 2 tanks and it quietted right down. Motto before taking to dealer try the 6 buck fix first. Mine is an 03 I am not sure we have the same injectors however. I am beginning to think the new trucks are picky about fuel and need it cleaner than ever I think a FASS is in my future!

Yuk!!! Three WEEks!!!
Well that STAR group is definitely not customer oriented. They released 3 new injectors to my dealer to "trial and error" until they find the defected ones. As of Friday,..which marks my full 3 weeks they have had my truck. They changed out three injectors and no change,..still does it. I'm hoping,..as is my dealer that the last three will do it. I must admit I'm impressed they have stayed with it this long. I don't even want to think about what could be ahead if this doesn't do it on Monday. And of course they will have to wait overnight again so best case is Tuesday for me to get her back. The only thing satisfying about this deal is that they agreed with me after an exhausting check of this thing,... it was in fact the injectors. So hang on guys and I'll update you soon, if in fact we have a fix.

Injector knock
For those that didn't see my other thread regarding the injector knock, I had injector #2 replaced about 2 weeks ago. The knocking is gone now. I have added a new sound clip made after the injector was replaced. You can listen to the difference for yourselves. As was the case for the first clip, the first 4-5 seconds are with the truck idling in park, and the remainder of the clip is with the truck shifted into drive with the brake on.

Finally!!!
Get this,....(3) bad injectors. Per the dealer, cylinders 4,5,6 all were bad. He claims smooth operation and NO smoke or chugging. I am to pick it up this evening. Can't wait.

Knocking, Smoking, running rough and using a lot of fuel.
I noticed my less then one month old 04.4 2500 seemed to rattle a little when new but it now occasionally blows blue smoke on cold starts, idles rough, seems to mis-fire and getting erratic and less then claimed MPG (6.5 to 12 city) and 12 to 14.5 highway at 70mph or less. I now notice what sounds like a fuel knock at idle and power seems less then new, now at only 2000miles.. 0 to 60 seems to be 10.5 seconds and was closer to 8.5 when new.
I have been reading other posts about injector problems and even a CTD that self-destructed due to an apparently stuck injector After owning a few diesels and experiencing some injector problems I would guess that many 04’ Cummins 600’s are experiencing some sort of injector problems. Rig is going in next week for a check but I would feel better if I had a whole new set of injectors.
Btw, does anyone know if it is possible to flow check or bench check the new 600 injectors?
