6.0 gasser vs. cummins HAHA!
Why is it that anytime you comment on a trucks ONE lacking quality there is always some toothless redneck who calls you a troll? Talk to a chevy guy about the cummins and he whines, talk to the dodge guy about suspension and he cries, talk to a ford guy about the 6.0 and..well he agrees it sucks. It's a shame some guys can't just take the approach that no brand is perfect.
The hookup I watched was on dirt....not pavement. On pavement all tires are in contact all the time and suspension plays very little into it. Now, throw those two trucks on an uneven dirt field and that is a different story. Call it what you want, but standing there watching there really wasn't any question.
There are currently two threads active on axle wrap here and how horrible our trucks do in snow stock. Living in denver I can attest to that. Is it undrivable...no of course not, but the GM does much better. It just does, cry over it, call me a troll but it's still true. I drive both brands in the snow every day of the week.
As to what I drive. I have an 05 2500 QC cummins as a personal truck, my company has 200 GM duramax's as company trucks (which is what I drive for work) and I have an 05 Ford F-150 for the little woman. Brand loyalty is for short sighted wanna be frat boys. Buy the hammer that fits you best...and each brand has areas it is better in. I love my dodge, no doubt about it..but there is a reason the GM sells far far more trucks each year. You can't bury your head in the sand to make that fact go away.
By the way, the reason that hookup happened was because I was trying to get my company to let some dodge's into the fleet. My fleet manager was proving a point. Traction while towing up a rough, snow covered trail (communications company..we do that every day) and the lack of 6 speeds in the auto killed the idea. Yes, we could have gone manual but 200 clutches being abused trying to tow up rutted trails would be a maintenance nightmare. That and the GM's have given us nothing to complain about. That being said, I prefer my dodge and as soon as the 6 speed auto hits the streets...I will be at the dealer looking to trade up.

that one made me laugh out loudYou also have your stories ALL mixed up. I don't know where you work, or where the company that you work for is working out of, but you clearly stated in your first claim that you hooked the DMAX up to the Cummins in your parking lot and the DMAX made two laps around it with the Cummins...then you came back and said that the pull went down in an uneven dirt field? Don't add up to me at all...THAT is why the "troll" word came out of my mouth.
I have never heard of ANYBODY EVER coming out and saying..."Heck, let's hook two $40,000 trucks together to see who can pull who to determine whether or not we allow some vehicles into our fleet" but if that is what happened, cool. But always remember, these claims are never worth much without pictures/videos to prove something. I would go offroading/towing in rugged terrain against a stock DMAX any day of the week...and by watching that video that I provided...well I guess I would hook up to a stock on as well.
Derek
Derek, thanks for that vid!! I posted it on supraforums in the thread. This was his latest retort:
"I guess you didn't know people are "slapping on" GT55s on the 6.0 truck block and running a heck of a lot better than 10s. It is the engine all of the corvette and F body guys go looking for when they are ready to get serious. I haven't really seen too many fast car owners swapping in Diesels though, I wonder why? Gas engines always make more power than Diesels and I sure hope the oil pressure isn't a problem in my truck, since it has the same oil pump design as the 2JZGTE and has been proven at way higher power levels than a Cummins.
Driving a Diesel around with a collapsed cat (yes, they come with them now) will kill it just as dead as a gasser, just some dumb operator error there. Also, we aren't talking about transmissions, stay focused. I can cite plenty more instaces of blown up Diesels than gas engines in our shops, having seen these things steadily for more than 10 years.
If you really want to do one of those red neck style tug of wars, I'd need less than $3000 invested in my truck to drag your clattering stink bomb around the block as many times as I please, and I'd leave my "wimpy" gas engine completely untouched to do it. If you'd care to place a wager to that effect, I'd be happy to oblige. You bring a bone stock Diesel pickup (has to be single rear wheel, since that is what I have) and I'll bring my truck with no more than $3000 spent and pull you anywhere.
edit- BTW, I just got home a little while ago (3am here) and left my truck running in the driveway for 10 minutes. No issues with waking anyone up in the dead quiet at all. Try that with a Cummins."
So I called him out to dump his 3K into his truck and that we'd hook em up for a three grand bet. I also added that he won't come through because he'll be out 6K in which he could have bought a real truck to begin with.
I'll be sure to get vids if it ever goes down!
Bill, interesting points. Don't know about the redneck part, san diego is pretty classy last time I checked. But for "towing" in my case, I won't be towing off road. Hell, I don't know if my truck will even ever be offroad. I think Derek's vid speaks for itself - and I have a weight advantage with the mega.

[QUOTE=mkivbren;1362965]Yea, I'm not really concerned with racing him - that's why I have a 1000rwhp sports car and a sportbike. Guy with the same setup runs mid 8's and yes, it's a car that could also drive hours to the track and back - that wasn't the argument. It was him saying that a gasser is more economical and would outlast a cummins, lol! Bought the truck to haul the toys, as, that's what trucks are for. It doesn't make sense for me to make the truck fast.[/QUOT
your 1000rwhp supra didn't cost less then 6k to build. And Most supra's are jokes all that power but can't use it untill higher rpms most are dogs off the line
and still most only run 12-11-1/4mile (Their Dyno Queens)
reread your statement you said he said lets race and thats what I was pointing out in a race he'd kill you.
and you said no lets hook them bumped to bumper and see what happens you even said you'll pull 2 gassers to your 1 diesel.
thats just stupid pulling someone bumper to bumper has far less to do with hp/trq then weight and traction. who ever has better traction and more weight will win so stock for stock you'd more then likely win, but you'd have no chance in hell at beating 2 gassers very stupid comment on your part.
Don't get me wrong I bought my cummins because I wanted a truck to last a long time. But my old GMC 1500 with a stock 350 felt 2x as fast as my new diesel.
Why do you think most stock HEMI 1500 will beat most stock Cummins??? less weight and better power band oh yeah I forgot you own a supra you know nothing about a power band
just joking with ya man don't take it to heart

Nowhere did I say my supra cost less then 6K to build. I'm probably around 6 figures in the car easily at this point. Yes a lot of supras are dyno queens and slow 1/4 mile times. Many don't go so far as going standalone, tires, tuning etc. so you can leave the line at 12-13 lbs of boost and you WILL be in the powerband. Two close friends that drag their cars run mid to low 9's in their 6 speed trannys consistently. Not too shabby for a little 181 cubic inch motor!
Again, not talking about racing anyone here. Pulling him around in circles also comes to how much torque you can get to the ground and yes, obviously traction is a huge factor in that. I'm up taking his 3 grand either way.

Here's your "GM traction" and Dodge "sissy limited slip"...if you're a Dodge man, there is nothing depressing about this. It's quite obvious that the Cummins is just playing with the Duramax. You can see all four wheels spinning on that Chevy, by the way...then the Dodge LETS him pull him back and in the middle of being pulled backwards, hooks back up and drags him AGAIN...If you think that the suspension and traction is light years ahead, edited by admin and while we're on the topic of GM being light years ahead, why don't you head on over to a GM forum and ask them why they have to sleeve their tie rods so they don't snap...Chevy angles their tie rods, where as Ford and Dodge use straight through and MUCH more efficient tie rods...
Derek
PS...that Dodge might have a leveling kit, but take a stock 3/4 ton 4x4 Dodge and a stock 3/4 ton 4x4 Chevy off roading and see where that superior suspension, traction and clearance gets ya...

as for being able to pull 2 gassers.... i wish you luck on defying 4 more points of traction.... 8 tires of the same size will beat 4 tires of the same size... pus if your spinning on pavement it's not gonna do ya any good as seen in the video
