4x4 owners please do this:part II

i am still trying to figure out this wa wa wa sound.

I got my truck up to speed to check the front driveline to see if any of the UJoints on the front drive line got hot. They were cool as can be.

So here is what I need you all to do for me....

Drive your vehicle 5 miles or so at freeway speed. Then go under your truck and feel the rear of the transfer case where the front drive line hooks into it.

Mine is Hot....the ujoints are as cool as can be but my transfer case to the rear is hot.

Please check yours and post the result.

Search my user name if you want to know what the first Part I was. I never called it part I I just called it. 4x4 owners please do this then post.

My case isn't so hot that I can't handle it but it is hot....

Let me know your results.

thanks Roger In Phoenix with a wa wa wa noise...(going crazy)

i called a 4x4 place and they said its going to get warm because there is a bearing there. My questions is how warm is warm. Mine is really hot near the rear of the diff. It warms up the front drive line....

seriously whens the last time you checked the fluid in the tcase/tranny? if the sounds coming from there, i would start with the basics- fluid check being one of them. you said the diff is fine, so i wouldnt care about the fluid level/condition.

The diff's use gear oil; the xfer case uses ATF.

You're probably ok, but it might be worth it to crawl under the truck and see how much is in there and what the color is. If you want to change it out, it takes about 2.5 quarts.

You won't be able to leave your hand on something that's at 140 degrees F. over just a few seconds. 140 degrees is cool for any gear case in the drivetrain once it's warmed up.

my truck dont make that sound but my Jeep sure did.I thought it was the tire Wrangler A/T's they were well warn put on new dunlop granteks. Still made the wa-wa-wa sound like old snow tires going down the street. I then checked the hubs and sure enough the right front had a lot of play. New Timkin hub from Rock auto quiet as can be.
