4WD problem

2 times this week, I tried to put my truck in 4wd-LO, but it doesn't seem to be working. The rear wheel just spins...... no 4wd indicator light no clunking, no grinding. I put it into 4wd-HI it works great, the indicator light comes on and it pulled me out of the mud no problem.
Is there some special way to engage 4wd-LO, or do I have a bad switch or a problem with my transfer case ?

Do you have a manual or electronic 4wd slector. If you have a manual you must do the following to put it in 4lo.

1- Put the truck in drive
2-Go about 3-5 mph
3-Then put the truck in nuetral
4-Then shift from 2h to 2lo dont stop at nuetral
5-Put the truck back into drive.

To take it out of 4lo stop put the truck in reverse back up for 2-4 feet then put it back into nuetral. Shift from 4lo to 2h dont stop at n. Hope this helps out.

4Lo at a stop

How do you get your manual transfer case into 4lo when standing still? If you get stuck how do you do it? Or do you just put it in 4Hi and give it a go?

I have an electronic transfer case. I was trying to get it in 4-lo from a stop in park.

Yes, you need to be in neutral. Not park. Same for going back to 2hi from 4lo. I think the slight rolling they mention in the owners manual is to aid in the gear movement. Those shift forks in the T-case have been known to bend when forced.

My 02 6 speed T-case would shift easy no matter what I was doing.

Why is this? My two previous toyota's said you had to be completely stopped to switch from 4lo back to 4hi...Never had the grinding sound I have had in my dodge the one time I was in 4lo to 4hi completely stopped?

No problems with 4hi or 4low on my 6spd Mega. (all Mega's are electronic) I'm always at a dead stop in nuetral when shifting into/out of 4low.

The owner's manual is pretty specific about being in motion when changing into 4lo.

Yep, if not in motion can force it in place but might bend shift rods. Better to be in motion, 3 - 5 mph as someone said.

My ford is the exact same way. Sometimes have to do it a couple of times before 4-lo engages. Usually because I'm in a hurry.

I think part of it has to do with the auto still spinning internally. Even in neutral the fluid coupling turns the innards slowly. The 6 speeds, press in the clutch. No coupling. Probably why your toys never ground a gear.

Kinda similar to the old days when you had to pull forward then back up to release the gear tension in the old gear drive np205s.
