4wd Acting up

Gents I'm having a problem with my 4wd hopefully you could help me narrow down the problem. When I engaged my truck into 4wd not towing anything it works just fine all tires spin. But when I have my towhauler hooked up 12,000lbs and pull into the sand at glamis I get stuck. So I put my truck into 4h and stomp on the gas the RPM'S go up 3000+ but the tires dont move. It feels as if the tranny is sliping or the transfer case is not working properly. Also when i put the truck into 4l the colume tranny display jumps back and fourth from park to 2nd. please help. By the way i have 37 inch toyo tires and 22inch rims. thanks

Manual or electric? When I bought mine, the dealer said he has seen the switches go out on Dodge and Chevys with electric transfer case.

951Truck,
Mine did the same this past weekend, I only have stock tires but I got stuck leaving(Gordons Well). My toyhauler is about 10k. When I was in 4lo it worked great but I had a hell of a time getting back into 4hi (manual shift). When I got stuck in 4hi it didn't seem like my front tires were spinning? I was thinking I needed new tires but now I see you have 37's and you got stuck also....BTW is there a trick to getting out of 4lo after towing a heavy load through the sand?? Mine made an awful grinding sound when I tried to shift from 4lo to 4hi. Yes I had the trans in nuetral. I ended up shutting the truck off then shifting to 4hi and all was well after that?? I know 4lo is the best for towing through the sand but dont want have all the grinding and what not just to get it back to 4hi.

Well, my truck has the electric switch, so I can't tell you if there are any issues with 4hi or 4lo. But my Scout (77) has some issues getting out of 4lo. Sometimes I have to put it in nuetral on a slight incline, so it can role back. As it's rolling back, I take it out of 4lo and then I stop and can get into 2hi or whatever with ease.

But my brother's truck (02 6-speed) has no issues with the manuel transfer case. I wonder if they're the same ones.

Sounds like we both have similar problems. I called the dealership and they told me the best way to go from 4lo back to 4hi is to put the truck in reverse back up for about a foot or so then put it back into nuetral, from there shift into 4hi. I dont know how the other companies stuff works but it shouldnt be this hard to throw a truck into 4x4. Maybe next time ill get a push button system.

I read the manual about getting out of 4lo and it is a different method than what I'm used to but will give it a shot next time. BTW at least it was a mega cab that pulled me out...And he didn't charge me!!!

Are you sure that one rear and one front tire were'nt spinning?

My '03 is notoriously bad in the sand. It gets stuck with ease and that is without any trailer.

You guys probably know this, but low pressure in the tires makes all the difference in sand.

Jrussel ,Just reminded me if you air down your truck and trailer tires to 10 psi you could pull your self out of just about everything. I got stuck in Pismo with my tires fully inflated and aired down to 8 psi and pulled my self out with ease. 4 wheel parts sells little valve caps which you just screw on to your valve stem and it automaticlly deflates your tires to about 15 psi. Just make sure you have a good compressor to air back up. By the way Im headed to Gordons on Thanks giving to play around in the sand hopfully i dont get stuck.

Yea I always air down but I was leaving so I had already aired back up and the compressor was packed away. Next time I will stay aired down till I get back on the road then air up...We were supposed to go for new years but since my crash last weekend dont think we will make till next year now.
