4WD 2005 Ram question on hubs
Can't tell on my truck if the front axel has auto locking hubs or if they are full-time engauged. I understand that if I set the selector switch for 4WD, the transfer case engauges, but my front drive shaft is always turning leaving me to believe that the hubs are always engauged even when in 2WD. Help me understand what I am dealing with.
On an older truck, I had manual hub locks that when "off" allowed the hubs to free-wheel and did not cause the differential to turn. This of-course allowed greater fuel economy and less wear on the front differential and transfer case.

Yes your hubs are a unit bearing design, the bearings and hub tie directly to your axles. The transfer case is a NP 271, the same trans case the Fords use. When your trans case is in 2wd the axles turn with the wheels along with your drive shaft. The unit bearing is a sealed unit that when needing replacement comes as a complete bearing and hub unit that is bolted to the outer end of the axle housing and secured by a castle nut on your outer axle stub.Dyna Trac makes a free spin hub conversion kit that is $1795.00 plus shipping.Go to DodgeTalk.com and look under 3rd gen 4x4 talk, thread on DynaTrac free spin hubs with pics.
