4sp auto vs. 5sp.
4sp auto vs. 5sp.
Hi guys, im new to the forum and am trying to do a little homework prior to buying a CTD.
I've narrowed my quest down to an '04 or '05. But prefer the '05 due to its 5 spd. auto. My thinking is the 5 spd will get better economy when running empty. Is this all in my head, or is there something to my thought ?
As far as the duty the truck will be used for, it will mostly be used for towing, but lighter loads. 4000 lb. trailer. Would one trans. be recommended over the other and for what reasons ?
Thanks for your help.

4 speed until 07.5 and then it was motor and trans change with a 6.7 engine and a 68rfe trans (6 speed auto). 04 and 05 are both 4 speed autos (6 speed manuals)

WELCOME TO DTR!!!

Tori, I have an '02 with a 3spd auto but have a gear splitter which makes more like the 4spd unit. It pulls my 6k 5r really nice. But I have a '98 with the 5sp and gear splitter which makes it more like the 6spd. It pulls just as nice. The only thing I find is the manual gets about 1-1.5 mpg's better fuel mileage. You won't be dissapointed with either unit. I loved the spd, but have a bad hip, so went to the auto. Really haven't decide which truck I like better. But the auto is a quad cab, which my wife likes. Just find one you can't resist and you'll be happy.
ahhh, okay thank you. Maybe i was thinking of the gas trucks having a 5sp auto. (but maybe thats not correct either)
Anyway, with that question ruled out here is the truck i'm considering buying. Any input would be welcomed.
The truck is a couple hundred miles away, so i have not personally inspected it yet. I am very mechanically inclined, and work at an auto repair shop.
The truck is: 2004 Quad cab, 4x4, short bed, SLT. Has 3.73 ratio, and 103,000 miles. It has a matching Leer shell on the back also. The dealer says they are firm at $22,500 This seems a tad high to me, and is slightly out of my price range, but the truck is exactly what im looking for. Seems to be a seller's market for these trucks and finding one that meets all my "must have's and have nots" is few and far between.
Thoughts ?
