48RE vs 6 speed?
Ok guys, i went to two local dealerships today. One had a red regular cab 6 speed slt, the other had a patriot blue quad cab with the auto. Im a regular cab kinda guy but i really liked the quality of the interior of the quad cab...opinions?

We went with the auto because when it's not pulling the fifth wheel 5% of the time, it's a daily driver 95% of the time.
Also our fifth wheel is under 10K pounds, so no problem for an auto.
If it wass a dedicated tow vehicle or pulling heavy.. it would be 6 speed manual.

depends if you do alot of city driving stop and go then the auto. lots of highway driving empty stick or auto will do. heavy pulling 12k plus go with stick. daily driving auto. letting wife drive (no = stick; yes = Auto
)
your perference will be the deciding factor.

I have both a 6 spd and an auto and if you dont do ALOT of towing get the automatic. the gears are very close together in the stick and you are constantly shifting around town. I frequently take off in second, shift to fourth and then to 6th. also ,the automatics overdrive is higher and they run alot easier at 65 and above. the only reason I bought a stick is because I have a portable business where I have to pull a 15,000 pound trailer with 4500 pounds of tounge weight every week and I figured the mileage would be better with the stick (hasnt been yet)and I didnt want to have to worry about frying an automatic. with the small price difference why not get the quad cab as well? more room for hotties!
I thought about an auto this time but still have too many memories of the auto days - running hot and toasting the ATF. Mine is also a daily driver but I don't go thru the city to get to work so I stayed with a stick. I wouldn't give up my QC and 6sp for anything - the gears are absolutely perfect for towing! If I drove in the city a lot, it probably wouldn't take much for me to switch - next trade time. If I had an auto again, I'd put on the biggest independant fan powered cooler I could find, do some valve body work and use syn atf. Craig

Check my sig. I've got about130,000 mi on my 48re no problems.
Hope I just didn't jinx myself. Only advise on autos keep the oil changed. I do it every fourth engine oil change and check and adjust bands as needed. Good luck with ever you get.

I've got one of each, and they're both great - but I prefer the 6-speed cause I like shifting and listening to the whistle, and the low 1st makes bumper to bumper traffic quite manageable. The 48RE holds up fine to towing/abuse (I changed fluid & filter the 1st time in my 47RE at 173K miles
)
Either way - there's plenty of room for the hotties, but I guess the main reason I dig the 6-speed... I like reachin' for 7th gear

My 2001.5 is an Auto (see sig) and I am buying a 2006 with the 6 spd. I enjoyed the auto, but 3000 dollars for a hi-performance rebuild to hold the power is way more than a 1300 dollar clutch to hold the power.
I drive with my truck camper on all summer and have a 20 foot car hauler for the dirtbike, that I pull only once every week or 2. I also live in Bozeman where there is not alot of traffic.

I drove both of them. Here is what my take on both tranny's. The 6 speed runs very well but I didn't like the higher rpms at 75 mph It seems to run about 6-700 more rpm's than the auto (an extra gear would be nice) The auto trans is nicer to drive when just driving it around. The one thing to keep in mind also is the cost. Auto will cost you quite a bit more money. After mulling it around for some time I went with the auto because I like the luxury side of things and I am very lazy.
