48re upgrade

I have an 04 and dont like how the tranny seems to really slip when pulling heavy loads. Its fine empty but with a heavy trailer it has a hard time gaining speed untill the tc locks. Seems like the tc really doesnt transfer power. Fluid isnt burnt so clutches should be fine but am wondering if I can just change tc to a bd triple and do the transgo kit. I have a 60hp tow chip and dont plan to do any more to it. Just want an economical upgrade to fix the poor towing.

The stock TC's are sloppy until they lock. Its a lot more noticeable under a load.

Swappping the TC with a shift kit and some other internal upgrades is a good way to extend its useful life. If the rest of the trans is good and doesn't have a lot of miles you should be good.

I would consider doing the clutch packs and front band as those are the hardest hit.

Its got 150,000 relatively easy miles on it but I will still do clutch packs and band while its out. My next question is I dont want a harsh lockup and it sounds like some tc`s do this. Will a BD triple be ok or will it lock hard too? Thanks guys.

Depends on the VB is setup but usually the 04's don't have the issues the trucks with TH have.

TH is Tow\Haul. The 05 and up trucks have a different algorithm that is much mnore aggressive shifting and lockup. On them, setting a triple disk up like a single will literally shake the dust off the headliner when it hits OD. The triple never unlocks on the pulsed OD shift so its so close to a locked to locked shift you can't tell the difference. Towing it is VIOLENT!

Your truck's TH is just an OD off and not sure how aggresive the lockup algorithm is in OD. On my 05 you have to be 3/4 throttle or better to get much difference between the OD shift and the TC lock. At half throttle they are almost the same.

So besides goerand, who makes a single disc tc? I can't find any other options and being in canada it would be alot easier and cheaper to go with the bd triple since I can't locate any other single disc products. But I don't want a violent lockup. Thanks for the info.

The triple will work fine if you set the VB up correctly. Check with DTT and NADP. Both of them are in Canada and should have a single disk TC.

You arent lying about the triple disk lockup being violent. Sometimes I swear that my T-case shifter has touched the dash. Makes me pucker when I get to the 47 mph mark, feels like its going to chirp the tires.

Aggressive yes but that tell you how much power the Cummins is making stock or other wise. Put a tranny behind it will let the power flow. I swear going from stock tranny to what I have now w/o Jr it like running jr on sw1. Crazy how slushy the stock ones are.

I have heard that TCI is starting to make some nice diesel transmission components. They have always had good stuff for the drag racing scene. A friend of mine has been real happy with his DTT single and he lays down prob 600hp. My triple is from Midwest Converters in Illinois. It was part of the kit from PATC and I cant say one bad thing about this converter!
