I had a overheat light too!!

While hunting in WY this year I was towing a 7500 lb trailer up a steep hill, in the mud, in the snow, (35 F outside temp) in 4 wheel drive, with chain on all 4 tires. The hill is was a long muddy slog. At the very top the transmission overheat light came on. I put vehicle in neutral and idled till it went off. (as in the manual). My vehicle is a 06 Mega Cab TCD. With the automatic transmission. My questions are the following.

What trans coolers are factory stock. (somebody mentioned 2 above)

What temp does the transmission high temp light come on?

Another problem/question. When towing up hill under load (7500 lbs) if I have the accelerator depressed (given it the gas) and I release my foot (quickly) the engine tranny makes a chuffing sound like chuff-chuff-chuff.
Is this normal? or is this the turbine slowing down, or the torque converter disengaging?

On all the psot above I beat the Torque converters were not locked up. You can lock up the TC in 2nd,3rd, and 4th. To lock it up in 2nd just pull the gear selector to the #2 postion. Depending on truck you may or may not have OD lockout. Read your owners manual about this. A tranny temp gauge would help point out the problem before it turns the factory tranny temp gauge on.

If you haven't done it already, I'd be for getting the tranny flushed. I don't know the answers to your questions, but if it were me I'd do the flush ASAP

If you have the factory tow package you will have two coolers. IIRC someone said the trans light comes on at 280*
I'm willing to bet it's not your trany or motor making that noise. You are barking your turbo. Dont do that. It will snap the shaft in the turbo.
