48RE Stuck in First Gear
48RE Stuck in First Gear
So I got to drive my truck to work today since it has been about 2 weeks since I have drove it and guess what, it never shifts out of 1st gear. Stupid POS... I try to drop the gearshift into 1st and then back to drive and still nothing.
There are no CEL lights or OD light flashing. I will check codes with smarty tomorrow.
Does anyone have any ideas on what to check first?
Could a birds nest on top of the trans mess with it, I havent checked yet, but something could be on it...
The last time I drove it, it was fine.

I had the same thing happen on a new 06. The tranny was getting hot because of blocked flow. The filter element had the factory plastic cover (40%) remaining on it. I would have to let the tranny cool for 30 minutes before it would shift. Even then I would have to almost blow the darn engine up to get it to shift. Take her to the dealer if you have warranty. If not, take the pan off and inspect. Could be a bad band????

A no shift with no inspection of problem does not make for a POS.
Inspect fluid level and condition. Sounds like gov pres sol has stuck closed. I assume the speedo is working correctlly and the CEL is still not on.

Just got home and checked for codes and there were none... So I guess we will see what happens with it.
Edit: Just got back from a spin and it seems like I have some major slippage going on too...So...Guess what that means...

Same thing happend to me. I took it to the dealer they told me the trans was burnt up and it would be $4500 for a new one. Picked it up from them and took it to my Aamco shop near by. He found the second gear shift sprag was broken. He replaced it for $360 with a one year warentee. That was 60,000 miles ago. Oh he also showed me that the pan had never been removed. The *******/dealer did the diagnosis form the service writers desk. They never even look at it.

You need to take it to a transmission shop and have it checked out. A screwed up governor pressure solenoid will typically cause a 2nd or 3rd gear start. There is no such thing as a 2nd gear sprag--this unit has a overdrive roller clutch and and low roller clutch, most 1st gear no upshift problems are typically caused by either serious internal damage or a damaged vehicle speed sensor. The 48RE unit also uses a computer controlled throttle pressure motor--you may have a problem with that, but it should set a code.
I had a similar problem that you describe. My trans wouldn't shift and I thought it was stuck in first gear and slipping but it turned out that it was stuck in 2nd gear. Trying to start going in 2nd gear made it feel like it was slipping. Anyway, my problem turned out to be an electrical issue that never threw any codes because it was a short that was screwing with the computer. I found the problem from another member here (Pearce) that had the exact same problem. It was a wire that got chaffed by rubbing on a ground strap right by the transmission. Here is the work order that Pearce sent me when they worked on his truck. -
"Yeah, its all fixed up now. Here is what the work ticket said:
Diagnose vehicle and found DTC P2769 for TCC control circuit low. Follow flow chart and called Star, locate the YL/LB wire in pin #9 connector 109 chaffing on top of the bellhousing. Insulate and reroute wiring in connector Y1/LB.
Trace all the wiring coming from the bellhousing, there must be a wire getting damaged or something. Heck, if you want print this diagnosis and bring it to the dealer. Tell them to follow it.
Hope that helps. I know I was ****** spending all that time trying to fix it.
Pearce"
My truck had this shorting problem intermittent and was to the dealer over five times and left my stranded while towing once, but they could never find the problem when I brought it in because it wouldn't happen then and there were no codes. After I cleared the short it's been perfect for the last 55K miles. Hope this helps you out. You can go to the dodge body builder site to look up wiring harnesses and locations of them (I think it only goes back to 05 but should be similar to yours). http://www.dodge.com/bodybuilder/
Good Luck,
