48RE Slips in 2nd - Rebuild?

I just picked up my first diesel a couple weeks ago. It's an 05 Cummins and under light acceleration it's a bit rough getting into 2nd and slips in 2nd. I did the front band adjustment and the APPS reset and topped off the fluid with ATF+4 (it was a quart low) but no luck there.

I've taken it to Aamco ($3300 estimate) and another transmission shop ($2800 estimate) and both are recommending a rebuild with the Trans-Go Shift Kit. Any advice for a new guy to the 48RE world? Truck has 152k on it, original transmission. Bed has 5th Wheel rails so safe to assume it's been pulling. I'm assuming at this point I need to rebuild the transmission but I just want to run it by you guys and see what your thoughts are.

First of all,....Welcome to DTR Sir!

As Pat Daly said, Goerend Transmissions has been around a long time and they build all their own stuff in house. You can Google them and see if there is a dealer near you.

Personally, I have used ATS Diesel for all my transmissions in the Dodge Diesel Pickups I have owned. Like Goerend, they make all their own parts right out in Arvada, Colorado. They offer a five year warranty on all their parts. They also offer a three-disc and five-disc converter so you can pick what is best for you. Another good diesel transmission company is Suncoast in Florida.

With any of these companies, you can order the parts and have your installer put them in, or you can order a "complete built" transmission to your specs and then you send your tranny back to them as a "core." I would recommend "beefing up" any transmission you buy. That would include better and increased clutches, at least a triple disc converter, a billet input shaft, better valve body with increased line pressures and also a billet torque plate. Most of these companies I listed will do all or more of that. You can call them to discuss the prices etc.

If you call ATS, ask to speak with Mike Meineke and tell him John P. recommended you to them. Mike is a smart, great guy and he will take
good care of you. Their toll-free number is: 1-800-949-6002.

Good luck Sir!
