My truck w/9,500 mi. is throwing the code 1740 for the 3rd time. 1st time they installed new software, 2nd time they installed a new torque converter & an O/D solenoid & this time ??? I need input to possibly give to dealership & DC. Yall's help in this will help me tremendously. TIA.

You should be using ATF+4 in these trannies. I'm sure there will be flames, but it is unique and only available from the dealer and now licensed by Valvoline to produce it. Other's claiming ATF+4 are a best guess at the formula.

Post your tranny problem over at www.dieselram.com and ask for Tim Holt.
He's an expert with these trannies and should be able to help you.
Good luck.

Pete

I bought some Mopar brand ATF-4 at Wallyworld. Was this the real deal? They also have the Mopar branded oil filters.

Can't imagine why you've changed the trans fluid with so few miles, but Amsoil is certainly not the problem. There are many brands of fluid that will work fine in your 48RE. Valvoline, Redline, Pennzoil, and even some store brands. These stories of having to go back to the dealer to get the "right" products for your vehicle are just myths fostered by those that have something to gain.

I have not changed the fluid. The Amsoil is an airfilter. DHAWK gave me some good input via pm, anyone else?

Just a quick note to timcasbolt . If you don't want to use the approved fluids so be it but if you have a problem and haven't been using the right fluids don't be too upset if DC offers to void any warranty repairs. My understanding is that there are special DC only engineered friction modifiers inherant in the +4 tranny oil and if not used problems will show quite rapidly. To my knowledge the only approved products are Dodge ATF +4 fluid and I think Valvoline is now marketing a +4 product. I think that the Amsoil products are +4 rated but not necessarly +4 approved. Many are using the Amsoil with no problems but if you have a problem then DC can and will make your life miserable, and possibly expensive.

JMHO though....Don
