I have an 04, 305. I tow heavy pretty regular and it does fine until I have to go up an overpass. Just can't maintain speed.

You won't miss a beat in an Auto. 116k miles on mine.

I still have a clip that has fallen off my VB. Never have taken the time to get it fixed. I want to watch someone do it so I can learn and the shops that want $640 to do it won't let me watch.

So yeah my next one will be auto too!

I like mine very much. Wish it had the ability to turn off the od manually like the year before and the year after, but it's ok. When I tow, it's about 15000 lbs. combined weight, and there's no mountain around me that it can't go up at 75 mph. It does shift a lot to maintain the speed though, and burns a good bit more fuel when I'm in a hurry.

I thought I was doing good with only 64K on my 03. That is a great find unless something else is wrong. As far as the tranny goes...it all boils down to personal opinion. Don't worry about something going wrong with the 48re...they are tough. However, if you are used to the behavior of a manual trans, you might be a bit dissapointed with the shifting behavior. Once I got used to the auto shifting pattern...everything was fine. I am very pleased with my truck and look forward to putting a 100K plus before I get rid of her.

Are you sure it's a 48? Seems I recall something about the 47 being used to a point in standard output diesels afterwhich the 48 became standard issue in all auto versions.

As locomotion said, make sure it's a 48RE, DC used some left over 47RE's in early 03 trucks.
