if the build date is on or after 1/1/03 then it is the 48re. If it is the 305/555 engine then it is deffinately the 48re. i had an 03 SO with the 48re in it

According to my brother who is the parts manager at the local Dodge dealership, DG8 is the code for the 48RE trans. I came accross this when I was shopping for a truck. Hope this helps

I have a 04.5, had the tranny redone by timinva, once he had everything broken down the front end was a48re but the rear of the tranny was 47re, IM timinva, he'll verify this, seems DC used left over parts when putting my truck together, wonder if anyone else has this problem

Ed, you had the o/d planetary (6 pinion) for a 48re but only 5 o/d frictions. The same as a 47re. I have seen several 48re o/ds now that only have the 5, it is like DC just puts the parts in it that they have laying around. Tim

Dg8 Does Not Necessarily Mean 48re It Is A Trans Code But It Just Means Automatic. Looked Up A 03 So Today For A Fella And He Had Same Code And It Was A 47re.
When Dc Came Out With The 03.5 48re They Did Use 6 O/d Frictions And The One-sided 23 Friction Direct Clutch In The O/d Housing. They Sent A Bulletin Out That They Worried The Trans Would Shift Too Harsh Into O/d Because Of The Higher Boost Pressure, Stiffer 3-4 Accum Spring, And The Added Frictionon The O/d Clutch Pack. In 04.5 600 Ctd Truck They Went Back To The 5-friction O/d Clutch Pack. In 05 And Newer, They Have 5-friction O/d Clutch Packs, 10/9 Double Sided Direct Clutch Discs Just Like The 47re. All 48's Used The 6-pinion O/d Planet.
Hope This Helps, Pm Me A Vin And I Can Tell You What The Truck Is.

48re

i'm curious, could this be why DC is so unwilling to discuss option of an exhaust brake for the 04.5 48RE? Perhaps there are too many autos out there with a combination of unknown / unacceptable parts?

Just my $0.02 worth.

My performance shop said one way to tell if it is an 47 or 48re is to take it out of OD and get the truck up over 55 mph and let off the "gas". If the torque converter locks and holds your rpms up until you drop to around 45 mph it is a 48re. If it doesn't it is a 47re. Kind of confusing, but so was the rest of this post. I have a 48re and it does this exact thing.
