48re ?

I am sure that all of you are tired of hearing about the 48RE but I have just started to have a problem with mine. It does not want to shift out of park. You have to pull on the shifter really hard to get it out of park. It will go through the rest of the gears just fine. Not sure if anyone else has had this problem. I have an 05 3500 4x2 auto. with 47000 miles on it.

Sound like a problem with the brake switch or the PRNDL on the side of the trans. Sounds electrical.

Yeah I sometimes forget I have to hit the brake to get it out of Park, it can be annoying but I guess the safety of the feature outweighs the nuisance.

A little off topic but, A buddy of mine called me the other day and ask what yr truck I had and started to tell me that some lawyers are filing a class action lawsuit against dodge on 03-05 model trucks. It had to do something with the transmission slipping out of park on their own, so what you are experiencing may be the beginning of the problem don't know......just thought I would throw it out there.

Not sure, but wouldn't that protect the transmission from damage as well?(Had my transmission flushed and serviced today. Can hardly notice it shifting now. Much smoother!)

Ahh the good ol lawyers. And I suppose they have only their clients interests in mind. People not skilled enough (didn't want to say stupid) to actually put a trans in park and set the parking (PARKING GET IT????) brake. Now the '07's will be more money to pay the settlement. Good ol America. Nobody is at fault. Everybody pays.

I agree with you about the Lieyawer part. You're off base to blame an obvious problem with the trucks(some more so than others) on the "skill" of the owner.

I know that I have to hit the brakes but even doing that I have to muscle it out of park. They have a fix for the coming out of park. I saw a thread on here about that.

I have also experienced this problem . However it only has hapened about 2x's in the last 2 years so i didn't even bother bringing it in to the dealer. I'm sure i would of been told that they have found no problem at this time.

I hear ya on that. Only thing is that if won't stop doing it. I could just see me with a full load of cars on it and it wouldn't shift out of park. That would be lots of fun.

Just a question but your not loading up the park pawl are you? Do you apply the parking brake while in drive, allow the weight to "settle" on the brakes and then shift to park? Then either hold the brakes firmly enough to hold the weight or keep the parking brake on until you shift from park. That is the procedure I have to follow in my 97 or I have to pull it out of park and listen to it "clunk" when it does move. Just my .02 might not be relevent on the 48re.

I did the same thing on my 02, if you didn't keep the weight off it would sound like something broke underneath.

My 03 has done this about twice also. I think that it was because I was in a hurry and actually depressed the brake and tried to shift out of park at the same time. Just a thought.

yeah I apply the parking brake before I shift it into park every time. Just a habit I got into. I am usually hauling no less that 14,000lbs at a time and it is a practice that I have gotten used to doing. I will be taking it into the dealer this Thursday since I have to go to KC and drop off this load on Tuesday. I usually put the truck into neutral and then apply the parking brake and then put it into park.

As long as you release the service brakes before putting it in park you should be fine, er doing correctly I should say.
