48,000 and going strong !!

My Son and I both have 04s and he's now got 48,000 mi since the first of the year. Most are highway miles pulling an 8500 pound car hauler back and forth over the Cascade Mountains. Not really a tough task for these trucks, but this kid has a heavy foot and never lets a Ford get by. Anyway, not a single problem. I've only got 12,000 on mine and I tow a 32' fireboat that weighs in at 16,000 lb. and I've pulled it back and forth over the same mountains now four times. And believe me I used all this truck had to give and not a single bad shift. Can't say that for the trany in my 95' sitting behind my V-10. That baby really took a beating !! ...... and a couple rebuilds.

Mine pulls a 30' T/T with no problems. Most people believe since DaimlerChrysler has had problems in the past that they are going to have problems now, so I think that is where the fears come from. If you take care of it it will last.

guess my step dads truck has the most miles on his 48RE

2003 2500 QC LWB HO CTD/ Edge EZ fueling box 48RE

75,000 miles on the odometer since last may when we bought it. 75,000 in a year and a half is quite a bit

hes pulled up to 20,000# with it, and the thing just still goes. When you put a REALLY heavy load, like 15,000# on it, the tranny will shift into 1-3 fine, but 4th it shifts kinda hard. When having a load like 8000#, i observed that the tranny would only occasionally shift hard into 4th.

Cant blame it for shifting hard. the tranny has had to put up with so much crap in the past year and a half. Even though it shifts hard loaded, when unloaded, you can "test the power" of the edge EZ under hard acelleration, and the tranny shifts perfectly.

weired noise upon shift from 3rd to4th 48re

i have experienced a weird noise and small vibration that is very brief when my truck has been under what i would consider a light load just wonderd if any body else has had this happen and if it is serious. My truck has 43k on it and its a 04 with an intake system and edge e-z box.

tourqamata.... The noise your hearing is the turbo waste gate opening briefly when shifting into overdrive. Nothing to worry about. When I removed the silencer ring in my turbo it quit making the noise , but she whines nicely now...

The "hard" shift into 4th sounds like torque converter lockup to me; occurs at about 50-60mph? Mine was a little harsh at first, but is a lot better now. I think the dealer reflashed the CPU when I had it in for service.

The 48re is reportedly at least 10x better than the 47re. The 47re wasn't really intended for diesel service, which is why the 47re CTDs were detuned. The 48re has new inards and is designed to work with the CTD, hence the autos and manuals now have the same power ratings. From what I understand, the 48re is good for about 700 ft lb of torque for reliable service, which is more than the Allison can handle without upgrades.

Seems like adding the D to C really has made a big difference in the quality of Dodge products. I wonder if these trucks would be this good if C was still alone...
