48re

I have almost made up my mind on which truck to buy, a Dodge of course. How can you look away from what the Cummins can do!

However, after reading everything here and on other sites, my concern is with the trans. Most say they have no trouble with it, but some do. I guess that happens about everything. But my other choice would have been the truck with the Allison.

So with that in mind, am I likely to have trouble with the 48RE? All I'm planning on is towing a travel trailer, about a 28 footer. But I want to get something that's gonna last.

Do they have adequate cooling? Do they have trans temp gauges?

Thanks

They come standard with a trans cooler.
There is a trans temp sensor which is used by the internal computer and lights an idiot light. To know the trans temp you need add your own gauge or tap the stock sensor.

I don't think there are enough miles on the 48RE for a bunch of people to say yes or no. I do think the most recent vintage of 48RE is improved over the first production version I got pre 04.5 and from things I remember ther 48RE is much improved over the 47RE.

A 28'TT is heavy, but well below what this drive train specs as max.

28k no problems with the 48re, although I wish I would have gotten a 6speed. Sooner or later you're going to want to add power and man does it get expensive upgrading auto's!!

do you know what changes are made in the 48RE 2nd edtion
how can you really tell if you have a 2nd production run??

I agree with lightman - I love my auto but I think if I ever trade this one in I may get a manual ( are put in a DTT, ATS trans)

I have got 27K on the clock and have had no problems. I do pull my 98 jeep TJ on a car hauler weight should be close to 5,500 - 6,000 lbs and trans pulled great. On a down note the one thing I dis-like is sometimes the shift pattern seems really wierd , like it cannot decide what gear to go in to. This has happened a couple of times, but only while running empty. Over all I am pretty pleased with the truck.

Ghost Rider has a 48RE. It has about 30K on it and there is about 9K towing my 28' travel trailer. The truck loaded with trailer weighs 17,600#'s. No problems with the 48RE.

Would I buy the 48RE again? You bet! I use my truck as an office at times and it's nice not having to shift!

I have read on other web sites about plenty of problems with the allison.

I am not convinced that they are any more reliable than the 48re

Time will tell, but I have had no problems with mine.

Only 13000 miles so far, but no problems with the 48RE. I have towed my 30' travel trailer a few times in these california hills/mountains. The tow haul button locks the torque converter in, I usually use it while hauling up or down hill, making the tow more controlled, especially down hill. Although I do agree with "bhoeffner" the shifting does seem to be a little confused at times when running empty. Other than the confused shifting, I am happy so far with the auto tranny and would purchase it again. However, it would be nice to see it with a fifth gear.

I've also noticed the 'confused shifting' when empty. Most of the time it's between 35-40 mph for me, and it seems the trans waits too long to shift.
