48RE?
Re:48RE?
And the numbers are just the next in sequence.
First came the 46RH
Then the 47RH
Then the "E" versions of the above.
Finally the 48RE.
Don't know what the "R" is for.
You'll find the 46RE in the Durango, Dakota, and the 1500 series of pickups.
47RE in the 2500 and 2500 pickups prior to 2003 (and some early 2003's)

4 is 4 speed
6,7,8 is strength or torque capability
R is rear wheel drive
H and E are hydraulic and electric controls

Thank you BoldtsWagon.

My 2500 diesel is a 47RE.
What is the difference between a 7 and 8 torque rating
and is the trans fully electronic??? That would seem unlikely because when my computer went out I still had 1-2, 2-3 shifts but not 3-4. So my guess is only the overdrive is electronic but not the first two shifts.

the tranny is elcetronic but i believe it has its own puter.

Re:48RE?
The electronic tranny uses electrical solenoid valves to actuate OD and torque converter lockup.
The hydraulic trannys had a hydraulic governor that increased pressure as the rpms went up. The electronic trannys have a governor pressure sensor and selonoid valve to set hydraulic pressures based on electrically measured rpm and a table of pressure vs rpm in the computer memory.
A defective governor pressure sensor is usually the cause of third gear starts. DTT indicates that 20-30 percent of new pressure sensors are defective out of the box or will go TU in a day or so.
The governor pressure sensor requires a voltage lower than the stock 5 volt when the pressures have been turned up, also to prevent third gear starts.
If you have third gear starts and are unaware of it, you can wipe out internal clutches in a day.
