48re
the 03's have 2 different trans. Look on the drivers side of the motor on the tag that says all the engine specs if the horsepower rating says 305 you have the 48 if it says anything else you have the 47
Build date from 01-03 forward = 48RE.
The 48RE went into production in January of 03 and ALL auto trucks from that point forward had it.
Previous to January 03 only the SO's and Cali trucks had the 47RE, HO's were manual only.
Don't look at the VIN, don't look at the HP ratings, neither are accurate for determing transmission model.
Build date older than 01-03 = 47RE

Is there a way to get under truck and tell the difference?? my truck was built in 12-02 but the local trans shop told me i had the 48re when i had them look at my trans problem?? i want to make 1000% sure and is the 47re junk?? if so is it easy to put a 48re in the truck if/when the 47re goes out???
Build 12-02 should be a 47RE. The 48RE was available as seperate unit then but you had to know who to call and what to ask for to get one. It is remotely possible that a 48RE slipped into a 12-02 truck but it would be a long shot. If the truck has a previous owner and the trans was replaced it could be a 48RE.
A 48RE will fit right in where a 47 was with no issues. In fact, a 47RE or 47RH can be upgraded with the same parts in the 48RE. There were really no huge diffeences between the 3 units.
The ONLY reliable way is pull the trans and check the internals for the differences. The 47 is not a bad transmission and can be upgraded to be as good as a 48.
Unless you can find a part number on the trans case and reference it back, there is no reliable way to tell a 47 from a 48 with an external examination.
