48 RE no go

48 RE no go

What is up with this transmission when sitting on a small inline overnight front end higher than rear and you shift into reverse and nothing happens, then put it in neutrel rev the engine a few times back to reverse and off you go no problems no nothing,

There is a check valve in the cooling line at the tranny cooler that is stuck open.

The torque converter is probably draining back into the transmission, maybe through the check valve mentioned above. Older chrysler transmissions are known for draining back overnight. It's really not a big deal if that's what is happening-just run it a bit in neutral for a minute. Or, you can put it in gear and rev it until it fills the converter. You aren't slipping clutches in the transmission during that time, so you won't burn anything up. I've used that method to get my old mopars moving for years now, and I've never had a transmission problem with any of them.

okay but how do you tell the dealer the problem when it only happens every now and then,,,, is this a known problem with a TSB out for it ??

Where is the check valve? ('06) I think mine in stuck closed, doesn't want to move at all after parking on a steep incline. (nose up). See my other post.

...if it were to "stick closed" it would result in a burnt up transmission. I for one removed (drilled out) the check valve on my trans line on my 01 (it's located in the trans line fyi. Since we're discussing 03-present DR bodys it's buried right behind/beside the drivers head lamp. It's the line with brass section at the fitting where the 7/8's and 3/4 wrench fittings join the two sections of line). The 47 and 48 re is a derivitive of the same old Torqueflight that's been around since the 60's. Even in the old manuals (service and owners) it stated that if the vehicle was to sit for an "extended" period of time it was advised that you put the trans in N and let it run for 45sec to 1min to fill the converter. Of course this became "unacceptable" in the later years (mid 80's I'm thinking), and Chrysler put a "check valve" in the cooler lines to help in preventing drainback. Basically a small rubber like ball and spring set up. If it' s under warranty the trans will usually get a torque converter, pump and input shaft seals. If it's not under warranty the customer will hear an explanation, like the one above, and figure they won't part with their personal $$ to rectify a problem that isn't going to harm the trans.
