If it's an SO engine then it'll definitely be the 47RE. You can confirm this by looking on the label inside your glove compartment.

My truck was built Jan 19th 2003 and it has the 48re and it is a SO. Your best bet is to take the VIN to the parts dept of your dealer and have them run a spec sheet on the truck 3 pages of everything your truck has.

If you have an HO/Auto you definitely have a 48RE. SOs came with 47RE until they were all used up and then they started coming with the 48RE.

The only thing my tag in glove box says is it is a 4 speed auto trans. There are code letters but how to Identify them?

If you stop by your service dept and ask for a build sheet for your truck's vin#, you'll get two or three sheets of everything your truck is made of. I got it on my '03. They didn't charge me for it and it only took a couple of minutes.
FWIW, my two 47RE's were trouble free except for a shorted governor pressure sensor/solenoid. Replaced under warranty. If you're running stock power and ATF+4, I wouldn't worry about it. The 47 is a good tranny.

And how to identify? Are the trans pans different shapes? If it is a 47 will the pan look like my 95? is there any tag or plate on trans anywhere?

There was a post somewhere on here a while back concerning this. The poster said something about the number of wires on the plug in on the tranny. If memory serves me, i believe he said 3 wires on the harness was a 47 and 4 wires was a 48.
