4 wheel drive noise

The strangest thing happened this week. I was driving down the road and I heard this faint chinging sound coming from under my truck. I got under it and took a look everything is where it should be and tight. Today I put it in 4 wheel drive high and omg the noise it started making. Sounded like rubbing or a dull grinding noise from the front end. Pulled it out of 4 wheel drive and its all good except for the faint chinging sound coming from under the truck and it seems to be located about the same place as the transfer case.
This is a 2004 2500 with 130 k on it any ideas? Thanks in advance

Terry

My guess isn't front axle Up-joints.

Sounds like what happened to a buddy of mines 03. The chain in his transfer case broke. Hope thats not the case with yours. Good luck.

Got the news. New chain and bearing in the transfercase. 1500 for this little fix and 2 days to get parts. I was also told the upper ball joints are bad and should have the diffs serviced.

Have heard about this problem several times so decided to do a search a few weeks ago and found the average price for a new chain to be about $160 and the bearing was less than $80. These places that do this repair are making a killing on labor. A friend of mine just had this done here locally and they hit him for $800 and it was in and out in less than 4 hrs.

Many owners dont check their fluid level, mine started to make some noise, checked it, it was 3/4 quart low, noise went away. I check every year. I usually check in the fall but this year got too busy for me and i got lazy.
