I read on these forums that on the 2nd generation diesels you should drain the water seperator every fuel up and/or each morning before starting.

I don't recall seeing anything like this in my owners manual?? Did I miss it?

I have a 05 2500 dodge.

Every fill up or every day? That's a bit excessive, maybe at every oil change.

Answer: The owners manual says to drain the water separator at each fuel stop .
You should drain the fuel filter/water separator while the engine is off. Since water is heavier than diesel it will end up at the bottom of the filter, but driving the vehicle will cause flow through the filter and may disturb the water at the bottom. Cummins recommends draining the filter in the morning before you start the truck

It says every fuel stop (manual) and cummins says every morning???

The most important thing is to purchase your fuel where they pump a great deal of it and that will minimize your risk of water. A local truck stop or here we have QT stations that move a lot of diesel. The remote station that sell 200 gallons a month is where you are most at risk for dirty/ water fuel.

I open my drain mine about every 45 days or 5000 miles. I have yet to find more than a couple of drops.

Actually, according to the text you quoted, Cummins recommends draining it in the morning, not every morning. The reason for doing it in the morning is so the fuel and water has had time to seperate and water has settled.
