3rd gen sound
had a guy come to the house to do some yard work. he had a 3rd gen CTD and it sounded great, almost like my old 2nd gen CTD. i asked him what he did to make it sound like the 2nd gen and he stated nothing other than having about 50k miles on it. he claimed the more miles the better sounding.
my question is this, as these 3rd gen CTDs get more miles on them do they start sounding more like the 2nd generations? really want my truck to sound better.
thanks,
david

Well, you really don't notice it when you are driving the truck each day. I sold some wheels last year to another member with an 05. When he pulled up I was amazed at how quiet his was. Then I remembered that mine used to be really quiet too. I couldn't tell you when it started to get louder though. I've got almost 70,000 miles on mine now.... It's still not as loud as a 1st or 2nd gen but it's getting there.......

I've got a tad under 36k on mine, and I've been asked to turn the truck off at drive throughs. Of course, mine is going to the shop for potential injector work on Monday too.

I have 50,000 on mine and it is noway near as loud as a sec gen.I have been side by side with alot of them and you can not even hear mine running compared to them. I am not saying I do not like the sound of the sec gen at all.I kinda wish it was a bit louder but there is no comparison to the sec gen as for the sound.

I really like the way it sounds though. If I keep it long enough to ever have to replace my exhaust I think I'll straight pipe it.

Hey Hoss, on replacing the exhaust. Don't know if you will want to wait that long! My dad has a 1990 and still has the original exhaust on it. I know cause I asked him if he had ever replaced his muffler and he said no. He bought the truck new and has close to 300,000 miles on it.

I pulled a bed bull of tree stumps, and a trailer full as well, over the weekend. I was pushing it pretty hard since it hadn't towed anything all winter. I immidiately noticed that it was running louder on Sunday morning following the beating. It was pretty cool to see it sagging down on the Timbrens pretty good. I guess stumps are heavy, but anywho, I also am noticing the more I run it hard, the louder it gets.

I straight piped mine with about 5k on it and it got a lot louder. Stock, it was too quiet. Now I can hear the turbo spool more and it has a better sound and is much louder. Only downfall is the drone I get around 2k RPM.

I already have changed the sound of my truck twice. Once with a straight pipe for a muffler and then putting a tip on it to get it out from under the skirted flat bed. Now I just printed off pictures of an electric exhaust cut out to take to my exhaust guy, to see what needs to be done before ordering parts to make my truck quieter and louder. I think I will call this project "Silent Thunder", or "Silent But Deadly" .
