305-70-17-Perfect size tire for G56?

Yes mine needs another gear too but it looks like the 305 70 17 may be the answer. They look like they will work nice on the factory wheels and I guess they wont rub?
I am thinking for some one that wants to keep her pretty stock that this is a nice set up.
Any thoughts? Will it trash my towing performance?
Thanks

Phil

How many styles of tires can you find in that size?

you are correct in thinking that is the optimum size problem is not much if anything to choose from remeber that 70is the height and a 305 65 is no taller than a 285 70 17 most tires you find are going to be mud tires and ones with a reputaion of noise MTR and buckshot if you find another alternative let me know

Another thing to consider is the neew toyo 285 75 17 problem is it is a toyo and they are proud of their stuff.

I had read a consummer report a while back on the Nitto Tera Grapplers and they were reported well above the BFG all terains and they do have a 305 70 17.Go on their website and check them out,NITTOTIRE.COM.
I am thinking these are the ticket and based on the Discount Tire tire calculator it will be doing 5mph faster with them.

I think you can do better than 305s for a G56, perhaps they are prefect for an auto. Although they are better than stock, they still won't get rpms into the sweet spot if your routinely drive in excess of 65mph. I think you need a taller tire, as tall as a 315/70 perhaps to be functionally worthwhile with G56 gearing. The 315/70 K/Os I'm running give me almost 10% reduction in rpm (2200 at 70mph) and I wish I had another 5%.

Some are running 315/70s on stock wheels with minor rubbing on control arms at full lock. On H2 wheels this size fits perfectly with no other modifications needed and IMHO the 315/17s are the perfect fit for the G56 trucks.

I am towing 7,000lbs and will probably get something bigger one day so I dont want to lose too much towing power.

Make sure what ever tire you get is "E" rated....

The last thing you want is a sidewall blow out while towing 7k lbs!!!

Are you guys with the larger tires seeing any better mpg, or do the oversized tires have so much rotating mass that mpg is the same or worse?

Highway you will gain (lowered your rpm's) and stop and go traffic you will lose 1-2 mpg.

I have the Nitto TG in the 305/70-17 E rating. They are great. The ride better than stock Michelins and look to be wearing good so far. I have NO clearance issues.

I have the buckshots and for MY driving style they are still too small. At about 60 I am around 18-1900 rpms wich is ok but I think at least a 35" tire would be better and a 36 may be optimum. On the highway I run about 2300 rpms, sometimes more depending on how big of a hurry I am in.

My next set will be 35s

Put the Nittos on last night and they really are nice tires.Smooth, quiet and they just seem like a perfect fit.I didn't want to change the wheels or have to lift the truck or loose much of my towing ability. So for me they are great.
Thanks all again for your input
