my thought is that I want to hear from some of these people who have gone through with the change out and see how they like it.

Could it be possible to chand out part of the tranny to get the higher final drive that the new g56 s have?

"In pre-2007 pickups the front axle requires a new redesigned differential case along with new side and differential pinion gears"

Sounds like this may cost a few $$$$ ....

Are you sure? Will there be enough surface on the carrier to adequately pilot the ring gear? If so, what you say makes sense. If that's the case you would think that AAM would sell the spacer for guy's w/ old carriers that want to get the 3.42.

new carriers generally are not that expensive... at least the dana 44 and 60 carriers i have bought in the past weren't...usually less than 100 bucks

if a new carrier is needed, i generally use it as an opportunity to upgrade to a limited slip or locker

That's correct, a spacer is available and would work fine.

Im pretty sure squash is right about the spacer, however ring gear spacers have been used for years as a bandaid fix instead of actually installing the proper carrier.
I agree that for most users the ring spacer would hold up fine, but alot of people in here are running 900++++lb/ft and doing 4x4 boost launches at the drags....I'm suprised the stock R&P holds up so well to that kind of abuse, but there in no way the 3.42's with a spacer will hold up in the front under high torque conditions. Like Levi said, use it as an excuse to get a LSD or locker.....just think 3.42 with LSD's F&R....heck while ur at it might as well throw in the wheelbearing/hub kit...

The speed reads off of a tone ring that is on the differential carrier. A tone ring is similar an ABS ring. So, it does not not care about R&P ratio, but the computer needs to be adjusted if you cange tire size.
