2007 hesitant start

Being a novice with Diesels........
My 2007 5.9l has on and off again troubles when cold starting, then will occassionally stumble when idling directly afterwards. The problem will kick off the check engine light, but the light will go off after 2 or 3 starts.
The problem seemed to start after my waterpump started leaking and sprayed coolant around the engine compartment.
It also only hesitates to start directly after the I let the fuel pre-heat (proabably wrong term) run when the light is on in the mornings.
It's happened when the temp is 40 to 55 degrees, so want to get the issue addressed before I go up in the mountains where it can get real cold. I've seen lots of threads relating to fuel pressure, air in the lines, etc.
Any thoughts?

Thanks

Does the truck put white smoke out when cranking the engine? If so check the air filter, when I first bought mine it did this. Previous owner never changed it.

The previous owner had installed a K/N filter into the air box. I haven't looked at the filter because the little gauge on the side is in the green.
I'll take a look at it, and clean/oil as neccessary.
Now this is going to sound stupid, but I read somewhere that your supposed to give the truck throttle whn starting. I haven't done this on a gas motor since my younger carburetor days. It hesitated and diedthsi morning on the first crank, so I gave it a little throttle and it fired right over, with no check engine light. Am I a moron on this one? If so, can someone educate me on this? I plan on keeping this bad boy for a long time, so don't want to do anything that's going to cause long term damage.

I dont know why it would make a difference the injectors need pressure from the high pressure pump CP3 in order to inject fuel. I dont think doing that will hurt anything although i dont think pressing the pedal down without the engine running will do anything for you at all actually.

Sorry, to clarify, I pressed the accelator while cranking the engine, not prior to cranking the engine.

Check out the Long crank post on this forum from erslll.

Your problem sounds like mine and I switched out the Fuel Control Actuator FCA. Little cylinder below the fuel input on the CP3, with a quick connect wire harness. Borrow a buddies to see if this is your problem...only costs a bit over a $100 to replace.

I'm assuming you 07 has the same configuration. If not, disregard. With the stumble, I was getting small puffs of smoke (my air filter was/is clean).

Good luck
