I believe the alternator is 135 amps and the grid heaters pull 95 amps. The system is designed to handle it.

The alternator can supply 135 amps, but EACH grid heater pulls 95 amps, so 190 amps when both are on (pre-heating and post heat). That's why you have the dimming of lights when you first start it.

please clarify preheating and post?? is this diff from grid heater on before starting and grid on (cycling) after starting ??

are there two sets of grids used in cycling while engine is running ???

**reason is was looking at putting in a euro headlight conversion housing and then putting in a HID (complete) lighting unit for low beams.. they use approx 20 amps to ignite then drop down to 2 - 3 amps... Was wondering about when you truned on the HID unit during cold winters and the extra amp draw (would be for only a few seconds)... but was still wondering about the STOCK system really worked for the record!

I wouldn't worry about it. The grid heaters turn off after about 2-3 minutes or if you drive over 20 mph.

I am not really worried about it - I just want to know exactly how the grids work. For sure if there is 2 grids at 95 amps at once..
