2004.5 Seeping Fuel

Hoping someone can shed some light on this issue for me. I noticed this last weekend that while at traffic lights at idle and after shut-down at the house, I could smell diesel. After looking under the hood, I noticed that my supply lines for injectors #4-6 were covered in fuel, along with road dust, and the backside of my engine was covered as well as the drivers side housing for the transmission. I am not going to take any chances driving it until I am able to identify the culprit and fix the problem. I was hoping others on this site could point me in the right direction for what to specifically look for. I have already checked the isolators for the supply lines and none seem loose or missing.

Thanks in advance.
Bob

Sounds like you have a loose injector line. First thing to do is clean it all up real good and start looking.

I know lately the topic of the loose feed tube has all but been beaten into the ground but if one had backed itself off a little would it cause what might look like an injector line leak? Surely if an inj line was loose the area would be wet while the engine was running. I guess with the engine under a load and the injection pressures higher it would have more of a tendency to show itself rather than at an idle.

Just trying to throw some other possibilities out there.

Check the #4 injector line carefully. Notoriously faulty and thousands have broken.

Thanks for the replies. I had time tonight to take a closer look at the truck. I cleaned the engine well and started the truck up again and looked for obvious leaks. Without any load on the engine, no leaks were found. So I removed the number four fuel line and inspected it under a bright light and again no obvious signs of damage. As a last ditch effort to find this thing, I reinstalled the line and took the truck for a small one mile test drive. When I reinspected the area, the whole area around the number four injector is completely saturated with fuel. I am probably going to replace the line as a precaution but have been told by a local fellow Cummins owner that there is something else between the line and injector that too can be leaking. Has anyone heard of this, I am heading for my manuals now.

Thanks
Bob

As Ropeteacher said, the 4th injector line is notorious for developing a pin hole leak due to a loose clamp....most likely your problem.

Yeap, cross over tube that goes from the rest of the way to the injector inside the head. It has a tq spec. that needs to be dead on. Can't remember what the setting is.
