2004.5 2500 11.5 rear end ring gear
Well i changed the fluid in my rear end and noticed the ring gear has wear on the ends of the teeth. This does not look good to me. Is this going to create a problem in the future. 94,000 miles now rear fluid has been changed a few times. Advise would be great.
If i see it correctly the inner wear looks ok but those edges looks like a machining defect. I can't think of anything that would cause wear there. How often is the fluiding being changed. i go ever 30k. I haven't started towing heavy till recently but has had a chip on it for over 130k. it appears normal on the inner wear.
Thanks for the reply. The fluid has not been changed as often as is should about 40,000 in between changes, but when drained it looks pretty clean. You must be right because the pinion gear does not show wear.

I do mine every year (about 15-20k miles). the edges look a bit off but keep an eye on it. how was the fluid? metal flakes in it? take a sample next time you do it and have it sent in and keep taking samples from then on
Can the pinion gear bump against the ring gear? That's what it looks like is happening. Probably in reverse the pinion is forced back into the ring.
But that is a completely uneducated opinion! The contact surfaces look fantabulous!

I was kinda thinking the same thing. I don't use reverse a lot or try not too at least. WE have a Cat D-4 dozer and a lot reverse driving is bad for it ,the way the gears are spiral cut according to our mechanic. But that is a lot of backwards driving.
