2003 no start dead in driveway

Guys diesels are new to me but building gas motors and old muscle is not.
My 2003 2500 is dead in my driveway. I have had it for about a month and have noticed the engine cranking a little longer to turn over since i first got it. I assumed it was because the temps have dropped from the 90's to 50's.

Any advise on where to start trouble shooting would be greatly appreciated.

You need to check for codes. put your key in go forward back forward back forward and watch the odometer, should give you some a code beginning with a "p". When you get that code, get back on here and do a search for it. Your 2003 probably has a lift pump on the fuel filter canister and they are notorious for failing.

no code and no start, that's a tough one. what's your fuel filter look like???

Is it cranking??? How much fuel is in the tank??? could parking on a slant be preventing fuel from getting picked up??? How old are your batteries??? how was it runnin before you shut it down last???

how many miles on your truck??? are there any modifications???

Strange race this evening fell asleep with 30 to go Jmac in third woke up and Jmac in victory lane talking about the power of prayer. Maybe jr needs to start praying.

I'll check back in the AM

hopefully someone with some expertise will stumble upon this with a solution

Some ideas...

Look to see if your fuel pump is on the filter canister or in the tank. If on the filter, it may be shot and the easiest fix is a new one from Geno's Garage.

I have an 03 myself and had similar issues. Ended up being a bad injector that wouldn't build up pressure for the common rail system.

To test your fuel pump, there is a bleed valve on your filter, just drain it into a two liter coke bottle and turn your key on, if the filter refills and starts to spew out the drain valve, your pump is good.

To start mine when I had said issues, I bled my filter and refilled it with Seafoam and cranked until it started. It freed the injector for a very short time but allowed me to drive it to the shop for repairs.

You need to fill out your signature line, search the forums for things that people do to there trucks, and then inspect yours to see what other owners of it have done.

First thing is make sure the batteries are good and hot.

If you think it's one of the injectors leaking this place has a blocking plug for testing the injectors. Not cheap though...

Thanks for the advise guys. I just picked up a filter and some seafoam. I forgot to mention there is an aftermarket fuel pump mounted not far from the tank on the frame. I hear it running. I am going to add the sea foam, change the filter and make sure I have fuel atleast to the filter. The batteries are fine and motor cranks well. thanks again for the help

When I went to remove the filter I found that the filter cover was not torqued down and the filter looked like it had not been changed for some time. I added the seafoam, new filter and retorqued the cover. She started right up...I hope that fixed the issue and is not a temp fix. Is there a way to determine if the injector(s) are on their last leg? The truck runs and drives fine and had not sputter or issues prior to not starting. Thanks again for all the advise. Good to hear you got her going. Mine did exactly what your is doing. The seafoam, while good, won't work forever. Mine ended up being a #3 injector that was leaking.

Two types of leaking injectors (besides one being cracked) are: ones that won't allow the common rail to build pressure and start and ones that leak into the oil (the bad kind).

I have the former. As far as the fuel pump is concerned, you have three types, the original next to the filter, and after market on the frame, and the OEM upgrade in the fuel tank. Sounds like you have the after market, which, is fine, you just need to identify which one and do research, as most have lifetime warranties.

Keep a can of seafoam and an empty two liter coke bottle with you at all times as a safeguard when you travel. If it was only a dirty filter, you may never need them, but, if it is a faulty injector, the problem will resurface.

it does help. I am heading to Martinsville this weekend 4 hrs from here so I will be picking up the seafoam again and keeping the 1 1/8 wrench in the toolbox. How do I know if its leaking into the oil or will I not be able to.
