Hopefully this video will open for all to hear. Let me know if your motor sounds the same as mine, we are both 305 HP. I obviously had the high idle set to about 1300 or so, and this motor was at full operating temp.

Our motors are quite a bit louder than the 04.5, 05, and especially 07 and newer motors so dont compare yours to one of these.

What? Loud or did you hear somethin wrong? . BHAF up front, straight piped in the back, shes' opened up like a diesel should be.

I wouldn't call it a tick, but I have noticed in the video there is a "thump" or some other loud, uneven noise every second or so coming from the engine compartment.

33,300 now, 16-17 mpg or so, dyno'd just shy of 300/500 a few months back, and smokes like a chimney under normal highway driving, you should see when I put the fuel to her, like when passing on a freeway! Brown headlights baby!

I have an '03, HO, 6-speed & have had the problem, also. In my situation, it was carboned-up injector tips.
Brought the truck to the dealership a couple of times & even had the service mgr. & another employee hear it. It wouldn't knock right at idle but, if you let the clutch out, slightly, just enough to start to put a load on the engine, it would start to knock (tick). Mine would knock up to 1400 rpms & then the knock would go away, for some reason.

The dealer found nothing wrong & DC would not try new injectors or anything else. Basically, they said that I was on my own with this issue. Even called DC & got a claim number.

Finally, I read on the TDR of a member that had a similar problem. He drove to Industrial Injection & they removed the his injectors & found them to be all carboned-up. Enough to change the injectors spray pattern. After cleaning or replacing the injectors, his truck ran fine.

I started trying different injector cleaners & they didn't work very fast. Finally, I drove from Phoenix to Palmdale, CA with my trailer to a diesel drag racing event. The road to Palmdale was quite hilly, windy & everyone was driving rather fast. It was a single lane road & I didn't want to be the "slow-guy with the trailer" so I kept up with traffic. All the harder driving cleaned up the injector tips & when I got to the track, I noticed that the engine ran without any knock. That's when I figured that these engines need to be run hard, once in awhile.

Ever since, when I notice the knock starting, I add some additive & run the hell out of it. Just run it up to redline, a couple of times seems to clean-up the tips, now. I've installed a Van Aaken box on the truck, & now, a Smarty Jr. These performance items were enough 'fun' that I no longer have any trouble running the engine a bit harder than before. Haven't had an injector issue for probably over a year, now. And, if I do, I know how to clean it up.

I don't know if my experience will help you but, it certainly worked, for me.

Good luck.

with the auto tranny, i think there are 2 ways: dealer can do it (most likely not for free) or in my case, at a meet and greet, a member put the smarty on my truck and ever since, i can now turn on my high idle whenever i am in P or N, all i do is turn on CC , hit SET. that gets me to 1000RPM. if i wanna sound tough, i can continue to hold the accellerate button and the motor will ramp up to 1500 RPM. just hit off or cancel, or the brake to default. with the 6 speed, i cannot say.

it will still also automatically go to 1000RPM when sitting idle in P or N for 60 consecutive seconds

He has a 2004. Yes they are the same 305/555 but, If your truck is built before Dec.10/03 can't be done unless you change out the ecm&pcm. Re-read the tsb, http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2004/18-004-04.htm kind of confusing, I know.

As far as the tick goes, I have a friend that has an 03 SO similar to mine. He noticed a tick also and took it to several dealers in the past and they said it was normal. I told him it could be an injector or an injector line. He took it to another dealer and they actually looked at it. They moved the injectors around to see if the sound moved. The sound didnt move so they pulled the head. He said that one of his cylinder walls felt like a wash board all the way around. Luckily it was still under warranty and he ended up getting a new engine out of the deal finally! Dodge really doesnt like parting with their money, because it took two months to get his truck back! I hope that this is not your problem but it could be.

That is really interesting! When the tsb came out I went to the best tech around. My ecm/pcm did not match the build date or the engine serial number so I was S.O.L. He told me my ecm and pcm are not capable of accepting the reflash. I could have a newer ecm/pcm installed...too much! I would really like to get to the bottom of this confusion. So you are saying you have the cruise control manual high idle with a build date of 9/03. That doesn't meet the tsb requirements alone. What is your engine serial number? Does that meet the tsb? Many of us would like to get this clear.

Yesterday on Youtube I watched a video of an 04 with a tick. The torque converter bolts had come loose and that is what was causing the tick. Not saying thats what it is, but if nothing else works its worth a look.
