100K valve adjustement / Injector cleaned?
During 100K valve adjustement, injectors needed cleaneding?
Hi there,
While I this is my first post, I have been reviewing the forums here for quite some time. Lots of good info and folks.
Anyways, I have a '06 2500, with the manual 6speed/4.10 rear, BigHorn edition and just about to cross the 110K mile marker. I am the second owner from which I have put on about 70K miles since August '08.
I *try* to stay pretty consistent with the preventive maintenance, oil changes every 5K to 7.5K miles and fuel and air filters every 10K.
Only major items that I have had to do was change out the turn-signal switch, replace the sealed lower ball joints with greaseable ones (just done last week), front brakes, coolant/trans/rear-diff fluid change at 80K.
With that and at just at 110K miles, I decided to get the valve adjusted this week. Over the past several months, the chatter has seemed to increase as well as a little bit of a rough idle. Now, I have owned several different types of diesel cars and trucks over the years and somewhat used the rough idle. But first obtaining the truck, the idle was remarkably smooth.
So with that, the mechanic who is doing the valve adjustment ran some test against the injectors and determined that all of them needed to be pulled, cleaned and flow tested. He is confident that is the source of the rough idle and I am tending to agree with him.
Now the big question - how often does these injectors need to have this type of work done?
By far this truck has been my favorite and looking forward to driving it to the end (either the end being Dec 21, 2012 or when the chassis completely gives out).
Thanks all,

I will say once you have them worked on make sure you use better fuel filters, the best to use in the stock canister are the 5 micron Baldwin PF 7977 or the 7 micron Fleetguard Stratapore FS 19856 or Donaldson P550800. My self I refuel to use any other fuel filters but the one listed and to date have no injector problems in my 06.
Seems like some last forever and some not so much. Fuel filter upgrade will certainly help.
I lost 2 injectors (5&6) around your mileage. Only way I could tell was that I began having starting issues. Once replaced it idled smoother and quieter with valve lash done.
I think you get used to them as they start to fail... Flow test will give you peace of mind. Good time to upgrade nozzels if you are thinking of doing that. While they are out have them tested with the new tips.

I think one of the biggest reasons mine have held up is due to me changing the filter every oil change. I change my oil every 5,000 miles.
Well, the shop called and said that two didn't pass the flow tests so I'll be getting two new ones. Truck will be ready on Monday ...
Yeah, good point about the filter change interval. I replace the fuel filter every other oil change, but somtimes that would 7,500 miles ... so there maybe have been times where the fuel filter was in there 15K miles. This is definitely a lesson. Filters are definitely cheaper that injectors.

your truck does not have a 4.10 in it. a good project would be to add a 2 micron filter. it takes about two hours to fabricate and install and $120 in parts and filters. add a fuel pressure gauge and change the filters by the drop in pressure. the dirtier a filter gets the better it filters. those that change the filter out before pressure drop is throwing a better filter away than the new one they are installing. if you decide to do this pm me your email address and i will send pix of some mounted on 06's along with instructions
Um, I thought it had the 4.10. It turns around 2,500 at 70mph. I have driven similar trucks that at 70, the RPMs was down near 2000.
My truck turns 2000 just under 65mph.
I need to get the buildsheet from Dodge I guess.
The "PF7977" filters is what I have been using.

You're right carl48. It's all in the details. Apparently the '04 manual I drove for a while, it's NV5600 is apparently geared much differently than my G56. I didn't know the trans and ratios changed.
I just found a calculator online and the RPMs I am seeing are indictive of a 3.73. Thanks!

As its been pointed out filtration is key to long injector life.
That is what I thought so too originally, but as I am finding out, the G56 tranny is tricking me to believe such. If it wasn't for the tranny, the RPMs would match up against the MPH for a 4.10 rear.
