06 Tachometers - Whats up

Have a 06 with auto. Dealer has replaced cluster twice and I'm now having the same problem again with tach not giving correct reading. Does anyone have a clue as to whats going on and how it can be properly repaired.

Probably have a problem with your CrankPositionSensor. Slide under and look right up at your balancer. The sensor torwards the left side of the truck is it and it is more than likely covered with oil or fuel from above. Some has seeped into it and could be causing an intermittent fault in the Bus circuits.

Noticed mine was starting to act funny today too, i'm leaning more to my cluster though because a couple of my other gauges have been acting funny too.

Once I mentioned it to my dealer and he said he never heard about it before, mine is erratic at idle only ,the engine sounds fine, the odd thing is that after I installed my pac brake ,I removed the rear ECM plug on the engine during the install, and repositioned some other cables near the steering box ,after my tach was rock steady on 700 rpm for over 2 months and just lately my erattic tach at idle has returned. I cant see that it could be the cluster only at idle,it must be somthing eles.I will be asking my dealer about it next time.I dont think Chrysler has figured out this one yet, since some guys have obviously had new clusters installed and still have issues with it.

I dropped in at the Dodge dealer while the tach was not functioning properly. They put the computer on it and it was reading the proper rpms on the computer from the port and the tach was all screwed up. The service manager did the actual test while I watched. He hadn't ever seen anything like it. Since I have already had two (2) replacements, he was going to do some research then get back to me. No calls yet.

Got a call from the service manager today. They feel that its mechanical part of the tach that is faulty. For the past several days the tach at idle sits at 0. Sometimes when I tap the cover in front of the tach, it will pop up but will most of the time go back to 0. Every now and then it will run up with accelleration, then back down to near 0. This will be the third replacement cluster. Hope its the last! The last two went about two (2) months before noticing the problems.

I am just wondering why the 07s and 08s dont have this problem when they have what looks like the same tach, and if they are not the same internally, then why not, must have been a problem with them, unless they are made by a different vedor for some other reason, which means they could be different internally.Cracker your original is bad and the 2 replacments are bad, odds are the third one will have the same problem.Either more clusters than not have a serious manufacturing fault /something is damaging them once in the truck or Chrysler doesnt really understand whats happening so they are just shot gunning the problem.Usually after the second replacment of a part like that a red flag would go up.Perhaps this problem has only just begun.

I've had problems with mine too. First the tach was very erratic, took it in and had it replaced under warranty. Now the speedo occasionally sticks and will only move in 5mph increments until the truck is warm. If I constantly tap on the dash everything works fine. I noticed it also effects the oil gauge. I even went so far as to pull everything out and put dielectric grease on all the connectors but that didn't help either.......so I gave up, don't have time to go back to the dealer every week.

This is not happening on my truck yet (hopefully never will) but I got this on my Neon ('99). The solder they used on the back of the board was cracking and separating the gauge motor wire from the board. I would have to hit the dash to get it to work, over some bumps, different temperatures would make it not work/erratic. I was told to try to put a lil heat on the back of those solder points or try adding some solder to it. Works like it should now. Not sure if this is the case with these trucks, but it's a possibility. The other possibility is the connection between the gauge cluster and the harness is not getting a good connection, another problem with the Neons.

Cold solder joints would do it,the older the clusters new or used the worse it would become, also vibration would make it worse, but since Ive never looked at one I cant make a comment on that, other than to say what I just did.Wonder where they were made?

Mine has done this for a good while now. I suspect that it was a cold solder but haven't pulled the dash apart to tell. Has anyone priced out a new cluster from Chrysler?

Over the past week mine has gone really crazy. The needle is pegged to the BOTTOM of the peg. It went all the way around and now floats where it darn well pleases.

Any developments with anyone else?
