'05 Bad Injectors and fuel in oil

Guys,

I am posting this for a friend. He has a 2005 3500 auto with 30,000 miles.

He has had one injector fail at 27,000 miles. The dealer replaced the injector and installed a full set of rod and crank bearings. This week he noticed that his oil pressure dropped to zero at stops and he checked his oil see that dip stick was way above full. He now has 2 more bad injectors.

The dealer will only fix the two bad injectors...

He told them he's gun-shy of the truck and wants a new engine The SW said forget it DC fixes only what is broke.

1. He is using a chip and thinks this may be a problem? Is it ?

I have been away from this forum so I am rusty on recalls, etc.

Thanks for any help!

Tom

If he has a chip/power box/programer on his truck then he is lucky they will even replace it under warranty as those things viod your warranty if they know you have one on the truck. It's possable the power box is screwing up his injectors with higher line pressure.

Is he using a pressure box or computer programmer?

Sounds like he may need to find a different dealer to use.
The guys I have do work in KS sell Bullydog and Edge products......

I'll check about the chip.

He has removed it when he takes it into the dealer.

Mule, what is a pressure box?

Thanks!

I checked with my friend and he is running a Predator Stage 1 box.

DC replaced 2 injectors and said the bearings were OK.

The service writer told him that they had replaced 7 injectors since he worked there and that was 3 years ago.

His Predator on the higher settings will raise the rail pressure above the normal 25,000 plus PSI it runs at. Once you raise the rail pressure on the injectors above their limit it can and will screw up injectors its just a matter of how long it takes for them to break. It sounds like he needs to be buying better injectors if he wants to keep using his Predator on the higher settings. Also he is lucky his dealer has not found out he has had a box on his truck or they would make him pay for the new injectors and void any warranty he has left.

Question for you or anybody else familar with aftermarket injectors. Are some or all aftermarket injectors "stronger" and less likely to break than stock ones? If so it seems like upgrading them could save your engine since the stock ones go out so frequently and cause so much damage.

Recetly went thru the same situation on my 04.5 and complained that just replacing the broken injector didn't fix the problem. Still only got 1 replaced and oil changed and sent down the road. Less than 30 days later same thing but this time in Kentucky so stranded for 3 days. Out of pocket 3 nights motel, rent a car, food (should have been home sunday night, not wendesday afternoon. Long story short tried lemoning it, tried attorney, finally gave up and traded for an 07 5.9 and ate the loss. Hopefully many of the earlier problems have gone away on this 07, it seems to run quieter, smoother and stronger than the 04.5. Hoping all is well.....so far I'm happy other than the money I'm out on the old one....

IMO, the F-1 injectors are the highest quality made... I don't think you can do better than Don M

I second that f-i injector tips are tested to 39,000 psi

Wow!

Is it the tip or body that usually breaks on the stock ones?

This truck is stock other than the Predator box.

XLR8R...

"Ya think? Probably no gauges, either...."
what guage package will tell the driver he is over pressurizing his rig?

Secondly, do any box mfg'ers state that their units will cause injector failure?

A lift pump fuel pressure gauge and a common rail pressure gauge will tell you what the aftermarket fueling boxes/SW is doing to your engine... and I don't imagine the aftermarket fueling vendors want to the injector durability issues their products might cause too loudly.

My friend is thinking of selling his box.... is there a group that says that fueling boxes and factory injectors go together or do you need to buy the following as a package...

1. lift pump FPG
2. CR pressure guage
3. High performance injectors
4. Aftermarket fueling box

Is it true that the newest generation of Dodge Cummins trucks have a firewall on the computor that prevents any aftermarket additions?

Thanks guys for all your advice.
