So my brother-in-law has an '05 and has the typical complaints about it shifting back and forth from 4th to 3rd towing an incline. I told him that I read on here that if you are going fast enough, you can shift the lever down to 2nd and it will hold 3rd gear. I tried it on my 04.5 and it works - not that I need to with mine. So last weekend he was towing and decided to try it. Worked great going to his destination, then on the second big hill on the way home it scared him to death. He was doing 65mph with the lever in 2nd and the truck running in 3rd. Suddenly the thing down shifted to 2nd on him. He wasn't sure what had happened at first and then noticed the tack at 3700rpm. He quickly bumped the shifter to "D" and it shifted up to 3rd....and then to 4th....to 3rd... you know the routine.
My question is, has anyone else had this happen, or know why it would have done that?

My 04.5 will hold 3rd gear locked up in tow/haul starting @ about 50 mph.,& once locked,will stay all the way down to 35mph.If I drop the lever to 2nd,It will lock the t/c @ 25 mph,& stay locked up 'till I drop down to 20 mph.It won't stay in 3rd ever if I put it in 2nd.But it will stay locked up 'till I hit the governed speed,& probably even above that,as long as I keep it in 2nd.I have to think that your brother in law had the lever 1/2 way between 3rd,& 2nd.& it slipped into 2nd after a while.Good luck.
