I am changing the fuel filter on my father '04 Cummins next weekend. The proccedure seems straight forward. I only want to make sure I do it right of course..
Do I need to drain out the water/seperator fuel out of the filter bowl first? Or just unscrew it and pull/plop a new one in? Thanks guys in advance.

If you don't drain it and clean it out, you will be starting the new filter out with whatever water/crud is in there....PLUS... IIRC, it will be free to get on the INSIDE of the filter whereas it was on the outside of the old one.

Run hoser RUN!!!!
At work I have a hand pump suction gun. I use that to vac out the fuel and any contaminates at the bottom of the filter bowl. It then gets a brake clean bath and wiped out with a lint free rag.

Hope these pictures help.
Fuel Filter Housing
Fuel Filter Removed. Notice the small amount of dirt in the bottom of the canaster? This is why you drain the fuel and clean it with a lint free cloth.
Dirty Fuel Filter
Instructions that came with the Fuel Filter
New Fuel Filter
There you have it.

One thing missing on those instructions is how to start the engine after a fuel filter change.
BUMP the starter (don't let the engine start), then leave the key in the 'on' position. You'll hear an electric fuel pump running. When it stops, the fuel filter is full--you're ready to start the engine.
