03 won't start

Buddie took his 03 to the dealer yesterday whith these symptoms, when the truck sits for a while it wants to crank for a while before it starts, Monday he went to start it after it had sat for most of Sat, all of sunday and until about 6 AM Monday, he said he cranked for 20-30 seconds with no start until he shot it with some either, Dealer has had it for 2 days and is still scratching their heads Sounds to me like a lift pump??? Anybody else have this problem or know more about it than the dealer. Thanks, Dean

I hate to say it because it seems too obvious but the lift pump would be my first guess.

I just got back from his house, he said dealer if they can't duplicate it tomorrow will charge for their time, a couple things I forgot about are that the truck had a small Edge chip on it which was removed before he took it in, it still wouldn't start without it. The other is that for the 50k miles it has on it he has always run off-road fuel in it and is worried that they might not warrenty it. Is it right that these lift pumps are like $400-$500 if thats the case I'm going to order him a FASS

4-500 hundo? Geez, I'm sure there are plenty around he could have. If they have to do the in tank pump then I could see it being that much because of having to lower the tank, etc. That pump is marginal at best anyhow. He may be better off in the long run doing a FASS or the like now before they do the in tank "fix". Once they do that it complicates the otherwise easy install on the 03-04.5 trucks.

Three things that could be causing the no start are:
1) bad lift pump, to ck take the filter out and cycle the key, you should be able to hear it and the filter canaster should be filling up, if not, bad pump
2) bad CP3, the dealer should know how to ck that
3) bad high pressure valve, the dealer should know how to ck for that also.

I've had all three things happen.
