03 Rough Idle

Lately I have noticed my 03 has a rough idle, like a surge. I have ran injector cleaner through it but with no luck. The truck runs great but twice in the past month at lower rpms it had a miss but then picked up and ran fine. Its showing no codes and runs great but the surge at idle has me a little worried. I have herd of the 03-04 engines dropping valve seats, would adjusting the rockers show this? What are the common symptoms of injector failure, I have not noticed any diesel getting into the oil. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

I just reset it back to stock and it does fine but still has a little jump in rpm but not very often. I wish I had a rp gauge. Im going to buy a fca to see if it fixes the problem.

That sounds like the beginning of the issues I had. It got worse over about 1,000 miles or so, and would set a code occasionally indicating a bad injector.

Gave it to the dealer at 97,500 miles and they replaced #1 injector, which by then, had stopped opening all together. No fuel in the oil, just a miss. Covered under warrantee.
Back to evening beverage of choice. . .

Ok guys I just checked my rail pressure, there is a 2030 psi difference at idle. I was thinking that if there was an injector issue then there would be no difference at rail pressure, so I believe it to be the FCA on the Cp-3. When you had injector issues did you check your rail pressure?

No, I didn't. The truck felt like it was running on 5 cylinders (because it was) and didn't think checking rail pressure would do anything to help diagnose the problem.

Do you remember what the code was? My o5 is starting to have a slight puff in the mornings and feels like a small miss when warm. Thanks alot

If I remember correctly, P-2146 and P-0201. The CEL would set at WOT while getting on the Freeway. Not always, just sometimes at first, but just got worse and worse. Between the day I made the appointment at the dealer, and 2 or 3 days later, #1 stick quit altogether. It was almost 1k miles between first sign of the problem and repair.

For 'out of warrantee' work, I would seriously consider Don M's Formula 1 tips and repairing the bad injector. Look at http://www.f1diesel.com/injectorsecho.html and http://www.f1diesel.com/injectors24.html. I'll be considering the Mach 1.6 sticks.

Easy out from Napa, but you gotta be really careful not to scour the fca mounting holes in the process.

i was gonna mention it may be a sticky fca, but looks like you've already thought of it.
