'03 oil filter
'03 oil filter
I'm sure this has been discussed, but....is the filter really the same on the '03 as previouse years ? The local dealer said it was - I could have swore I heard discussions that it was different.
Re:'03 oil filter
From what I understand it is the same with the exception that the 03 filter has the fluting on the bottom for a cup oil filter wrench to fit on. You change the filter from underneath the truck where as from above on the Gen 2s. I will add the 03 filters are more expensive at the dealers. I paid appx. $16.00 each when I took delivery of my truck. You now can get them at Genos Garage for alot less.
Re:'03 oil filter
The new filter (Mopar 5083285AA) is “backward compatible” and can be used on ALL 1989 - 2003 Turbo Diesel engines. Advantage of this filter is the fluted can which simplifies removal from underneath.
Re:'03 oil filter
Hey Muddy, how many warranty claims has your local dealer had on '03 CTD'S? Did the engines fail or something? My curiousity is peaked.<br><br>When I had my DC dealer do the first complimentary oil change, they put on a smooth gray oil filter (not fluted).<br><br>FWIW: I have an '02 Stratopore oil filter on my '03 right now. Seems to work fine. It was sold to me at the local Cummins Power Store because they didn't have any '03 Dodge CTD filters in stock. Its easier to change the oil in this truck than most other cars I have ever owned.
Re:'03 oil filter
Down the road a few months when the 02 and before owners try to buy filters, old numbers will be superceded by the 03 number. I've seen this before. Besides they charge more for the 03 filter. Increase the bottom line.

Boy, I'd love to use a "wrench" on that scalloped bottom for my '02 instead of a strap wrench around the smooth can. :
BTW, if you buy a case of '03 filters from Geno's Garage, they're throwing in a free wrench for a limited time.

Now I am confused! Yeah I know, it does not take much. Re:'03 oil filter
The dealer gave me the same filter you got. It is identical to the ones I used to get for my '97 CTD. It is actually not the filter for the '03 - but the only difference is the scalloped bottom. I did put mine on last night. It does fit and work - just have to use a strap wrench instead of a cup wrench.

Mexstan,
You definitely have the old part number for the filter. As mentioned above by 98720 the correct Mopar part number is 05083285AA. I double checked the part number on my invoice for the filters I purchased when I took delivery of my truck. So with absolute assurance you have the incorrect filter. I still believe from what I have heard and read that the filters you have will work fine. They just don't have the fluted bottom.

Re:'03 oil filter
I emailed my dealer and here is the answer I received:<br><br>The information you obtained on the oil filters is correct. Allow me to take a moment to explain why you received the old oil filters. When the new diesel first arrived at our dealership, they were equipped with oil filter part no. 5016547ac. At some point, Chrysler released this new filter but did not inform our dealership formally. I do apologize for the confusion and inconvenience, therefore, if you will e-mail me your address i <br>will be happy to send you two new oil filters (part no. 5083285aa) to replace the other filters. As far as the warranty issue, I am awaiting call back from Chrysler but neither our service advisor or our service manager <br>believe an oil filter would be grounds for cancellation of factory warranty. Especially considering there is no difference in size or volume between the two filters. At any rate, I will get you more info as it becomes <br>available to me. Re:'03 oil filter
Here is the latest email from my dealer re warranty:<br><br>"Your warranty will not be cancelled for simply having the 5016547ac oil filter on your truck. The new oil filters were on back order for quite some time and dealerships had no choice but to use the old filter. The backorder has since been released and I will be shipping you two new filters (5083285aa), on me, as soon as I receive them. Keep the others in case you are in very desperate need of one. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks."<br><br>As I have stated in previous posts I think I have an outstanding dealer. Their fast response to my email of yesterday just proves this one more time. Am impressed that they are sending me two replacement filters at no charge. Also received an email from one of their their sales staff complimenting me on wanting to find out the facts on the correct oil filter to ensure the best for my truck. She told me that most of the customers just buy a vehicle and then drive it until it breaks and then try and either blame the dealer or get it repaired under warranty.<br><br>
