03 engine runs away after injector change

Last nite I finished changing injectors on my truck. As the truck started (fairly easily),it started knocking and smoking heavily as I would suspect. The thing that scared me is the motor climbed in rpm to 2200,so I paniked and tried to shut it off at the key only to have the motor to continue to keep running. I pulled the battery cables off and the motor kept running .I loosely put them back on tried the key again and it slowly shut itself down. Wow the smoke was so thick in the shop I couldn't see the overhead lites. The turbo at the exhaust pipe connection is puking some engine oil on the ground ,any further attempt to start is like an engine starving for fuel like it just about wants to start . I have lots of fuel to the inj pump butnoyhingat the common rail coming out. This morning I will take off the intake hose to see if the compresor side is oiled up. Any suggestions Btw I'll get codes in the morning

codes are p0204,p0341, p2149 ,p2509. The 0341 code appears to be new. Also I started the motor without the airhorn on the intake. I thought it wouldn't need it at idle. Going into the shop now.

Most likely all the fuel that was in the head drained into the cylinders and filled the combustion bowl on the pistons. I normally use my air gun when all the injectors are out and blow most of the fuel out of the cylinders. Less chance of a runaway and fuel knock when first starting. Diesel engine does not need electric power just fuel to burn and air. Best thing to do is put a thick piece of wood or thick book over intake horn and cut off the air. No air no combustion, Lucky it didn't reach self distruct RPM.

instead of heading back to the shop, I would have been heading to the house to change my shorts. LOL

Thanks Bigiron, that makes sense to me about the fuel collecting on top of the pistons. Funny how nobody seems to mention to blow the excess out. Oh well went back at it this a.m. until a group of well wishers showed up and burnt up my time. I removed the pipe from the turbo this time and tried starting the truck. It seems like it wanted to fire but refused to run. Lots of white smoke came out of the tail pipe. I also remembered that i removed the engine to body ground and hooked it up again this morning, hope that didn't do anything to the ecm. I don't have a programmer that reads pressure or gauges to read fuel pr. Anything I can bypass to get this started ?

Can I make a fuel rail plug from an old inj. line to see if one of the injectors are faulty. I should mention I bought used injectors 3 years ago and thought they may come in handy. Although looks can be decieving these suckers aren't even discoloured on the body like the originals. Are the orings on the body anything special ,or can I use orings from a generic oring kit ?

Just bend the end and crush it really well. Should work I have the tool so I never tried using old line before. I would get the correct o-rings for the injectors. If the o-rings leak just a little you will dilute the oil with diesel fuel.

Used injectors sitting around for 3 years and the engine ran away when you installed them???

I would remove those injectors and send them off to a reputable shop to get them tested.
I wouldn't trust those injectors as far as I could throw them.

It will be cheaper to check the injectors than to rebuild your engine.

Residue will build up on the needle(internal) and cause them to stick. Especially if they've sat for three years.

finished the install, truck start nice, runs nice but the rpms hang up when shifting gears. Bad injector still ? I guess there was alot of fuel in the exhaust ,took 29 mins of driving to get rid of the haze. Nice to know I didn't smoke the ecm when I took the cables off during the runaway.

Check your MAP sensor... are you still getting codes?

I recently removed and replaced my injectors, my truck didn't want to run, it was just nasty connections at my MAP and injector harnesses. I cleaned them with an acid brush and some alcohol and it was golden.
