Which years to avoid?

couldnt find a general forum for a question like this, but from '96 to '02, is there any models to avoid? Some that have more issues, I know the 53 block is a thing to run from in the 24v motors, what else?

Im working on buying a '98 12valve, but if that falls through just checking out my options on other years.

Thank you

It really depends on what your goals are. Everyone has their own opinion on what is best. 12 valves are good because you can get good HP's from them with out any money invested. 24 valves have more creature comforts that are nice. Best of both worlds???? P-pumped 24 valve....Just do your research and figure out what you want. As good specific questions any more folks can help you out. Good luck with your seach.

On a personal note, I love my '01. I am not crazy about the VP44, but I have already replaced it and it wasn't too bad. There is always the p-pump option or I can use an electronic programmer...which I have one currently. Either way you decide you will be happy...they pull like a locamotive!!

Even with all the VP44 problems I prefer the 2001-2002 trucks. Unlike the earlier trucks, they have rear disc brakes. In 2003 they went to a more complicated and expensive injector system and started adding more emission stuff.

01-02 and some 00 have the better slip on rotor set up, better for the big brake upgrade and they have the easier hub bearing to replace.
also some have the ability to pull codes thru the odo.

I wouldn't turn down a good truck because of a 53 block unless it is cracked already. The likelihood of it cracking is very slim, its just very pronounced when it does happen here. FWIW, my 24v with the 13mm pump and 75mm single turbo is a 53 block.

I test drove a 99 built in 9 of 98 this morning in seattle, it had a 53 block, I walked from it, was going to anyway, but that was one more reason. Im not going to chance it.

Thanks all

I love my 97 12V, however I have added a few creatures comforts from a newer truck. Dual heated power leather seats, auto dimming rear view mirror. Just last night I brought home a cab from an 02, along with the 02 front axle, and dually bed and rear axle.
So bottom line, find a truck in great shape at a deal and you can always fix the weak links, or add anything you want.
Let the maddness begin.

I LOVED my 98 12 valve, but if I ever do it again, I'll go with a common rail. So easy with the plug & play options, and much more comfort than the older models.

Even with the "free" mods you can do to a 12 valve, there are still expenses. $300ish for gauges, $100ish for a GSK. At this point, you're half way to a good programmer with the monitors built in.

Not ever going to try to talk someone out of a good 12'er, but I'll take a different route next time around.

Finding a 98 12v is so hard, especially in the configuration I want.. QCSB.. SO, going 24v now, looking at a 99 with a fresh rebuilt auto now.. Every options but heated seats and 137k miles!

just depends on the truck and your budget. auto or manual? condition of truck and price are most important.
