What size spare can you carry??

Hey, I was just wondering what size spare tire will fit in the stock location under the bed, held up by the cable setup from the factory..

I have 285/75's on my truck now but realised the other day that my spare is a 265.. Probably would get me home but I'd sure hate to have to rely on it at all when I have my trailer hooked up..

If I had a spare 285 laying around I'd try it and see if it fits,, looks like a close fit on the 265 though.

So, how big a tire has anyone been able to stuff up there??

I have a 285/75/16 mounted on the stock wheel for a spare. It is on a 95 with a Mag-hytec cover installed. It is a close fit, but it fits.

I have a 255/85/16 on stock rim under mine. Good question though, this tire size isn't very common and I'm thinking of 285's myself. Hopefully it will still fit.

is your truck a long bed or a short bed? I have a Quad cab short bed, I dont know if that makes for less room in there or not.

Also, what's a Mag-hytec cover? Does if effect you room for a spare tire?

Thanks for the responses guys

A Mag-Hytec is a rear diff cover. It is a bigger cover that allows more fluid capacity and better cooling.

I would like the 255's. I have 8" wheels, so they will be a little too wide for those tires.

I run a full size spare

285 size for a 16 inch rim. In fact its a bridgestone mud terrain.. fits under there no problems...

I have a 315-75/16 mounted on the stock steel spare and it won't fit under the bed even with 98% of the tread gone.
It resides in the bed, and I hope I never need it.
I'm thinking it will get me off the mountain, but that's about it.

Looks like I'm gonna go used tire shopping and see if I can find a descent enough 285/75R16 tire to mount on my spare rim now that I see it's been done.
Sure enough if I get a spare the same size as the rest of my tires I'll never need it,,, but if I keep the 265 as a spare,, I'll need it when I least want to..

Thanks for the replies

It just has the "round"sidewall" look to it!! . What, it's only an inch and a half to narrow!!! It's better than no spare at all!!
