Water pump - what's up with this?

Gonna spend Thanksgiving break wrenching on the goat. I was pricing water pumps today. NAPA has a new one for 45.99, dealer wants 275.00. Is this much difference common? Something seems not right about this. Let me know your opinions. Thanks.

LOL, the difference is the markup.

NAPA makes good stuff, Cummins is also reasonable as I remember.

Yup, got a brand new pump from a local parts plus here for 48 clams. I actually have better heat now that the coolant actually circulates!

It's not just Dodge dealers. The local Caddy dealer wanted over $700 to change out the water pump in my wifes car. The pump was $36 on line, figure it will take less than 2 hours on the northstar engine.

exactly, my boss's truck had w/pump go out and he paid $450+ for it. I told him how to do it but he said "you have to be certified to work on diesels"
It doesn't pay to be dumbass.

Is that $45.99 water pump from NAPA a new one or re-conditioned?

I replaced mine last winter and I got it through cummins, I wanna say it was no more than $60. The dealer is outrageous when it comes to its parts prices. I'm sure the Napa one is good to use too.

Get the wrench for changing it out as well. If I remember correctly, you will learn a couple new swear words before you finish.

But yea, before I would pay 700, I would be doing it myself as well.

It was reconditioned. They had a new option that was $81.00, but no one has them in stock. O'reilly's across the street had a new one for $58, probably go that route, their re-man was $35 with core. I knew dealers were higher, just surprised it was that much.

I bought my water pump from Auto Zone three years ago for around $35. The pump has a lifetime warranty. The new pump was made in Canton Ohio vs the original made in England. The dealer wanted well over $200. Pays to shop.
